Thinking of doing a compression test to my 200tdi defender.

To be honest I'm just doing it because I'm relatively new to mechanics and I've now got a fair idea about the rest of the vehicle so now its time to move onto the engine and learn some new skills.

Theres nothing wrong with the engine, it runs sweet as can be expected. I guess my question is will a compression test help pick up problems that aren't yet apparent. Or is it the case that if it was down on compression this would be symptomatic in other ways?

Also, any recommendations for kits that are reasonably reliable and not too costly?

if it starts first turn of the ey theres not much wrong with compression, if i was going to do anything it would be to look at shell bearings unless you have something that makes you think compressions low

Hi James,

Ok, that interesting. I'm still going to give it a go just to learn how to do it.

Can you recommend a good middle of the range kit?
