Hi guys n gals, right time has come where i now need something more fuel efficient than my v8 landy, cant aford a defender at the minute so looking into a Disco

Iv been offered a 300tdi disco,

im wanting ANY advise on what to look for / listen for

Now i know the usual places for rust are

boot floor (lift carpet)
inner arches (do i just look inside the bonnet?)
cross member (pretty obv)
rear arches (under neath under wheel arch?)

whats the 300tdi like as an engine, easy maint, strong?

as i say im looking for ANY information.

il post up the info iv had given to me, anything else i should be worried about?

im assuming that the "badpoints" are relatively easy fixes whats your guys though
_______

the milage is reading 185,000 but the clock stopped a few months back, i have a spare one to throw in as i got told it was something inside as ive checked all sensors underneath.(new 1 reads about 120,000)

Depends really whether you want it for on road or off road. That sounds more geared for off roading. If thats what you are after depending on price/age the faults all sound fixable in my opinion.

Never mentioned did i...it will maibly be for on road with occasional use off road..but needs to be able to ow my dedicated offroader. Cheers.

its a 1995 model so what would be a "good price" and over priced and a cheap..

ebay they seem to go from 800 - 1500ish dependant on spec etc, this ones had all the rust work done inc front wings..the wheels and tyres arnt an issue as iv got a set at home i can use for road goign and just swap them over for playing out.

I paid £450 for my '97 Disco BUT the engine needed sorting skimmed the block and the head ....chassis was sound...I think my engines bits were £270 ish, skimming £250 and I had to help the mechanic at his workshop for a few days labouring to help pay for his time, he's a neighbor...it is my first Disco or Landrover.....I only got it to tow my caravan....I suppose a lot will depend on what you can do yourself work wise...good luck

im pretty capable, recently built a ccv, can strip and build an engine, cant skim heads but know ppl that can.. hmm been offered it for £1200..

That's about £200 more than I would pay for it.

Obviously that's without seeing it but anyone that lists Britpart springs as a good point doesn't know much about Landies.

i would be worried about it being kitted out for off-road, which means its probably done a lot and been hammerd for it. homemade snorkle as well probably means hes done a lot of work himself so might be a nightmare if hes bodged something and you need to fix it. personally i would go for one as standard and kit it out myself. and thats what i did. bought a '94 300tdi ES for 1100 completly standard and only gone offroad a couple of times.

if you are using onroad mostly get somthing that has not been messed about with so much 300tdi good engine but lift carpet in rear check floor for rust also try and check if heater matrix for leaks as it is a pain in the ass to change and give it a good run and recheck for coolant lossand suspension bushes and panard rod bushes as these can give you room for bargaining

1200 quid bargain there mate.

Sorry to go against what everyone else said, but buy it, strip it down to a more standard level to suit you, make a **** load by selling parts on eBay (yes, it's worth more in parts than it is as a whole car) and then you're winning.

If it runs, and isn't full of rot, its a goodun, cos itll break down whether it's already ****ed or not.

Sounds alright mate :)

lol ye im already into the "its not if it breaks down ..its when" with my current landy lol...

decided against that bit too much off road mods for what i need, so now looking at a 1995 3 door, fsh (not landy) no mods, no rot (any there has been has been done) 108k genuine miles all mots, 1 owner...yep 1 owner ex copper too so should be ok, never off roaded seen light towing (horses), manual in green.

hes asking 1600 with full MOT and tax til feb..bit steep from what iv seen would it be cheaky to go in at alot less? or what would you pay?
