Hi everyone, I'm thinking of getting another Defender and I've looked at a few. I have been offered one with a galvanised chassis which looks pretty good but its on a 1990 G reg but its a TD5 engine and body and i know TD5 didn’t come around till 1998 so i don’t know what to do. He says hes fully restored with chassi and engine ect. The full body is TD5 as the fuel filler cap is at the back of the arch. What do people think ?. Does it sound too good ti be true

Ding dong….

so look at the windscreen to bulkhead fixings. These should not be solid(ie you can fold the windscreen down) this should date pre TDI.

That rear tub also sounds like TD5
Look on the bulkhead(where the old tax would have been)look for 2 drilled holes for a VIN tag. G plate would not have these.

Also for receipts for the build this may show all the changes

But i have a 1987 E reg and those fixings on the bukhead are solid but chassis and engine numbers all match. Ive had this a few years now. As for the one im looking to buy its the rear tub, yes you could change it to TD5 tub with fuel filler at over side of arch but why would you. Its also got TD5 dash with electric Windows but normal window winder doors. He says the engine is out if a Disco TD5 is they anyway to tell if he has or if its the original engine to match the body

Every part is easily replaceable. So you could rebuild from scratch a newer model using the older one as a donor for if. The issue is if too many parts all match the same it is unlikely to have been done in this fashion.
What gearbox and transfer box is fitted? These will have id numbers
What axles are fitted these will have id numbers?

Then after looking at these large parts look at the other more easily swapped parts like body panels.

Ha,ha, its a good solid truck plus its got galvanised chassis so its a bonus. I just cant see why you would put a full TD5 body on it instead of just replacing crap parts especially when your stripping it to replace chassis. And I don’t fancy loosing £7 grand. Ive seen 2 with galvanised chassis with TD5 bodys on this
