These Kenwood speakers any good?

They look ok
I have two like that fitted under the dash in my landy i bought the spacers from the main dealer for about £2 each and fitted speakers out of maplin (maplins own) they seem to give off a great sound, i was impressed by them that after plyboarding the side's of the hard top(insulated and covered with accoustic carpet) i fitted another two speakers with spacers each side, with the narrower side of the spacer facing the cab. Sound is great i can comfortably listen to the stero at 70 mph on the motor way and when i am playing in the mud to, I have a kenwood head unit but that wasnt that expensive only about £60.

It's not a great place to locate speakers, no matter what the quality is like. Having said that, it's the high frequencies which your ears find easier to locate - so I've put a pair of component speakers up front. The mids are in the usual Landy place (albeit with spacer rings), and the tweeters are up on the top of the dash. By adjusting the crossovers between the two, it's possible to balance the sound in front of you quite well.

In addition, I've got a pair of 6x9s either side of the rear door, and a 8" subwoofer in a custom housing behind the cubby box. It's all driven by a 5 channel power amp hidden behind the passenger seat :)

Finally, I went for a non-CD head unit. It's an Alpine into which I've plugged a 320GB hard disk - plenty of space for every CD I own :D

Thanks, Ive gone 5yrs without having a stereo fitted, so rather looking forward to having one.

Amp & sub are on my wish list also.

Cheers

Ive got the 17cm versions of these speakers in my defender their very good :), they are behind my cubby box up against the bulkhead in a homemade enclosure, they are very good, also i have kenwood 6x9's either side of the rear door, also in homemade enclosure's.
and i have an onyx (budget, but well worth £80) twin subwoofer unit facing towards the rear door, up against the rear of the bulkhead :D

Daft question perhaps, but I dont really know much about speakers to be honest.

Does the 6x9 reference refer to them being 6" diameter?

Ive often see these 120watt under-dash speakers on ebay. Anyone know if they are worth buying, or should I look for better ones?

It depends on the quality of the sound you are after, in my experience everything that i've ever had with kenwood written on it has been very very average. Pioneer make good products so if i had to choose between the two i'd go for them all day long. A decent head unit will make a big difference.

Have Kenwood speakers in my 110 at the mo under the dash and they are fine, wouldnt worry too much about sound quality comments too much tho (tis a fender after all ;) ).

I have a kenwood head unit and together they sound ok and clear enough for 2 speakers in the whole car but will be fitting a couple more behind the 2nd row of seats when i get some wood and a sub in the rear tub (mainly cos theyre sitting in my garage doing nothing and have been for over a year now :p )

Hiya,

I have the Pioneer speakers you mention in your initial post in the dash and the rear doors of my 110 CSW. Their low frequency response is very good for such a small speaker and on their own made a reasonable fist of dealing with what my elderly but still very capable Kenwood head unit could throw at them.

I would normally have chosen Kenwood speakers as I have been using Kenwood components since I was 17 (almost 20 years ago) but I have found the design of the covers appeal to a slightly younger buyer...if you know what I mean?? I'm not a fan of their current trend for fussy over designed grilles. For the rear door fitment I purchased a pair of the spacer rings that are used for the under dash installation as they even out the curve in the door panel.

With 10cm speakers you'll find there isn't much bass, so I fitted a Kenwood KSC-SW10 powered subwoofer and bolted it to the floor under the rear seat. It's not the type of subwoofer that deafens people 100 yards away but adds a very pleasing 'warmth' to the sound and doesn't take up much space. Have a look on Ebay for Kenwood KSC-SW1, SW01 or SW10. Alpine also make one called the SWE-1000.

Remember bad speakers will embarrass a good head unit but good ones will flatter a bad head unit.

Cheers, Martin

My pleasure, I'm a member of a couple of other Land Rover forums but have never got round to joining this one. If you want to install heated mirrors, a heated front screen or other fun electrical things then shout...I'm in the process of doing all sorts of fun electrical upgrades on my 110, have just fitted some excellent front fog lights in the bumper on mine which have made a huge difference in the recent foggy mornings.

If you need any more info or pics, especially of the my rear door speaker installation, let me know.

Great, will do, cheers:)

Recently bought a heated front screen myself, and was eyeing up a pair of ready made heated mirrors on ebay today, but at £60, a tad expensive compaired to the diy kits.

Hope to have secured the services of the auto electrician who works at the same firm as me, to wire up my aerial, stereo, heated screen etc. Useful to know about others such as yourself who have gone through the same experiences etc.

Pics of your rear door speaker set up would be extremely useful though. Im planning to fit underdash speakers in the front, but havent decided on the rears yet.
Many thanks:)

With regard to the heated mirrors - you can buy just the elements for under £20. With a bit of planning you can make a really neat installation with them.

This is what I did, stuck the pads to the back of the existing mirror glass and made a very tidy job (if I do say-so myself!) of running the wires down the inside of the mirror arm and under the hinge.

I have them controlled by a 10 minute timer relay that is triggered by the heated rear window switch.

I'll try and post some pics of the rear speaker installation once I've actually taken some pics.

The link below is to my heated front screen installation thread on a different forum. Because Land Rover wire their HFS with a link to the oil pressure switch to prevent it being used with the engine off using all the proper parts is expensive. With my system you need an OFF-MOM switch to trigger the timer which then energises the coil on the relay for 10 mins but you could turn it on with the engine off. Not a great idea given the current the HFS draws.

Hopefully my wiring diagram makes sense, it will to your auto electrician for sure.
