Happy new year to you all.

Changed my thermostat over the break after reading the post by Johnnyoxford. The old one was stuck open.

Had the landy nearly 4 years and its lucky if it gets about a 3rd up the temp gauge and the heater has allways blown cold. Its a 200tdi.

Swapped the stat for a genuine one (88°C) and topped up the coolant slightly through the expansion tank cap.

Now the temp gauge within 3-4 miles goes up to very nearly the end of the white. (there is about 1mm of white showing on the gauge to the right of the needle).

It stays there and did not move for the remainder of the 25 miles. stopped for about an hour then drove home with exactly the same thing.

The heater now gets ok - warm (not hot).

Nothing seams to get hot, even waited abit till the gauge read half way and slowly took the expation tank cap off - no hissing or anything.

I know it looks like its reading too high but could it be the temp sender unit is not working correctly.

Thanks, SpenB

all temp guages will read at a different point in the fenders,my old 200 tdi used to sit where yours is..when i put a 300 tdi i couldnt get it to read properly.

so i put in a digital temp guage and it read at around 82 degrees and didnt ever go above 90

Thanks for that - I feel better now that it should be ok.

Where did you get the digital one from or where do I look and what exactly do I look for.

Thanks again for the fast reply

I fitted a new temperature gauge too which came with its own sender. I've also got one of those infra-red thermometers which you can point at the radiator hoses and see what temperature they're showing. It's great for extra piece of mind when you're not sure if your gauge is doing what it's meant to!

Thanks for the replies.

What do you all think about the temp gauge sitting so high?

As it didnt move in the remaining 20 odd miles of the journey etc - it shouldnt be creating any damage should it?

Could it be the temp sender is faulty after not reading any hot water for the past 4+ years?

Cheers.

is it an original defender 200tdi engine? or a disco one?

I read somewhere that the disco has a different sender unit, so reads incorrectly if connected to an original defender temp gauge.

Yes - it is all original.

Just hopeing the old sender which at least for 4 years possibly aint read anything over 50-60°C has now just bust a gut with the new found heat and dont know whats hit it.
