Thermostat? I reckon...

My TD5 has started overheating, and the Cab heater doesnt get hot.

My immediate suspicion would be the thermostat.

But... do you agree?

Cheers all

What year is it?

As the thermostat has twin valves it is unlikely. What are the events leading up to this? Can you feel the waterpump working when the engine is revved? Is the coolant circulating? Are the coolant pipes over pressurising? Have you recently been playing with the landy in mud? Is the expansion cap holding pressure ok? Have you got water in your oil or vice versa?

I would be tempted to go for the water pump. It is driven by 2 lugs on the back of the power steering pump, which tend to break, and the water pump doesnt circulate the coolant

You can check it by unbolting the power steering pump...

Thanks for the answers fellas.
I have to admit to not having even looked under the bonnet yet - Ive only driven it twice recently and thats when I've noticed it.

Its a '99 Ratty. No Mud recently, but a few puddles :) Not used it for a few weeks, then took it for the MOT and it passed. Driving home (up a hill) I noticed a drop in power, and the temp gauge was high. Coasted down the hill and it quickly went down to about 3/4 and on I went, power returned. Same last night, but without the power drop. As I said, the cabin heater has no heat either.
I'll check the water pump, hoses and filler cap as well as the dreaded oil/water/oil scenario as soon as I get a chance.
Thanks again for your replies so far.
(I knew it sailing throught the MOT was a bad omen!!!!!)

It does sound like the waterpump may be knackered. Hold onto the coolant pipes while you get somebody to rev the engine over 1500rpm. You should feel the coolant flowing when it's revved. Be careful not to everheat the engine as the early TD5's like yours tend to crack their cylinder heads very easily.
