Hi,

I recently changed the thermostat on my P38 Diesel.
Prior to changing it, the needle sat just below the centre.

But with the new thermostat, the needle sits just above the centre.

Can you say drill a hole thru the themostat in order to get the needle to sit a bit lower, or is there any other way to alter the thermostat.

Only other rememdy is to buy another thermostat?
Which by the way leads me on to the next question.
Did Landrover make different thermostats for different countries for the P35 Diesel? (it was never sold in Australia hence the question?)

cheers

Manufacturing tolerances. Get a thermocouple and measure the temperature - i would ve surprised if the actual temperarure is much different.

drilling a hole would work, providing you know what size hole - because thermostats already have a feedthru hole.
So would removing the thermostat.
As you seem to be sceptical about any replies - i suggest you make you own mind up and act accordingly.
that way you can blame yourself when it goes tits up.

Im guessing removing the thermostat may not be the best option, hence the reason about drilling the hole. Yes, Im aware of the feedthru hole, thats why I thought drilling another hole would lower the core temperature, however I wanted to ask others for their opinion.

Re skeptical, I guess you are referring to my other thread about the consdenser fans. The only reason Im skeptical is that I have read in forums that the fans are not temperature affecting and are only affected by high pressure in the ac. Others say it is temp sensored. Im only skeptical because I read the Rave cd all the way thru and cant find any mention of the temp induced turn-on of the fans.

Of course Ill blame myself it if all goes tits up. (but I dont want it tu).

Don't run without a stat.
Is this one genuine parts or a.n.other? If its a.n.other then get a genuine one.
You will get slight variations in needle position - it may well be your old one was on its way out & opening too early.
If you're worried fit an aftermarket type temperature gauge. The fluctuations on that should really get you going.

From memory....correct me if I am wrong, there is an input from the engine ECU temperature sensor NOT the gauge sensor to the HEVAC which will switch the fans on independantly of the two aircon pressure switches.
I can't understand the parania regarding the needle position. As long as it's central (ish) and does not creep upwards towards the red why bother-I wouldn't. You will not get millidegree accuracy from the simple rough temperature monitoring system used on the majority of cars. The days of a capillary tube type gauge went out years ago. If you are that concerned, get a calibrated thermocouple and calibrated precision temperature reader from RS Components and rig that up together with an internal red flashing beacon wired into the preset over temp contacts on the controller. Either that, or remove the instrument cluster, get a pair of pliers and bend the needle back to the midpoint. Alternatively get a set of drills in 0.5mm steps and drill the hole....remember though it's not the hole that controls the flow it's the flap operated by the bellows opening. Drilling extra holes will do jack ****e in solving the problem

OR,
you could buy another gauge off fleabay and see if it reads any lower.
Mine was showing too hot and the temp was Ok so I swapped the gauge (after thermostat swap ) and all Ok again.

On my old Minis it was possible to swap the temp with the fuel gauge just to check as they were the same internals just a different dial.

So the temperature stayed the same but the gauge sang the song you wanted to hear???What if the replacement gauge gave a higher or lower reading than you would have liked.
I am not happy with the way my fuel gauge goes down on the 4.6..perhaps I should fit one from a Micra?

Nope, the first gauge was reading hot. checked it with a lazer thermometer, the replacement gauge was reading correct.

Could have used the gauge that was telling lies and allowed for the discrepency but prefer to see the needle in the middle when all is well.

Best fit a micra engine to stop fuel gauge going down as fast :D

Yep...and convert it to LPG. I'm still running on petrol as the good Lode (Lane) intended.:behindsofa::beer2::beer2:
My mum is from Monaghan and she used to tell tales of smuggling petrol and stuff in the old days, so is it still cheap then:bolt:

Hope so cause when the landy is done and running Ok I may be coming home for a tour of the old country maybe next year.

Unleaded €1.04/ltr at the local Tesco-over here 91.9p/ltr so you are laughing. I'm over in the Vectra, the temperature gauge on which is reading just around 90 deg when hot and as Catherine Tate would say "I'm not bothered!!".
It's alright for those in the border counties, they can either phone through a "Takeaway" from the petrol station across the border, or if they run a deisel, get the boys in the brigade to deliver a 50 gallon drum or two of laundered deisel with the milk.:beer2::mil36:
