The time has come

The time comes in a mans life when he should own a landy
And Yes I have reached that time,problem is I dont know too much about them apart from I WANT ONE.
So I thought I would use the collective brains of Landyzone to guide me.
Let me tell you what I think I want.
I like a SWB,series 3, 1980/81, diesel, it could be a hardtop or pickup and not a big project I dont mind small bits (After all it is a Land Rover) I would like to have it for day to day use.
I dont know How much I should pay for one or what to look for I have read some bits on the internet but I feel getting advice from people who love and own one is the best way forward.
So please help me and give me your advice no matter how small as there are a lot of sharks and ripoff merchants out there and I dont have a lot of money to blow on a DOG

At this time of year the last thing you want is a series landy. the heaters don't even keep you warm in a heatwave.

As to prices well anything from £100 to £5k. depending on state of vehicle and mental condition of seller..

Get one with a solid chassis and a non smokey engine. and the rest is fairly easy to sort out.

Thanks Redhand and storm99 for your advice its just what I am looking for. And to Grimmer thanks for sharing.
There is a reason I want a 1980/81 landy, I plan to move to rep of Ireland in the new year and car tax is much higher than the UK but cars over 30 years old can be taxed of something like 30-35e and I will be able to get classic insurance.
Redhand is right in this weather a good heater is as important as a steering wheel.
Can you do anything about changing the series 3 heater to a better unit ?
(I have read a lot of parts are interchangeable on landys)
As to the price I will have to pay for this Dream Machine,Redhand highlights my problem the range is crazy I have seen adverts for cars for £50-5K and I dont know what I should be paying for one that is sound machanically and bodywise (I dont mind scruffy)
More advice please as I am a landy Virgin.
