The Smoking MAN

Yes, there is a thermostart, @8ha did mention that too. I had a look the other night but the pipe to it is solid from the solenoid valve to the manifold. But I think from the pump to the solenoid is rubber, so I could clamp it there for starters.
Would the solenoid for it be thermostat controlled, or would it be on a timer? I know you don't know this particular engine, but I'm wondering what usual practice might be.

Good news if you do have a thermostart, and it is faulty.
They are still available. :)

Well worth a precautionary change on that anyway, they can cause damage if they aren't working properly.

With the ones I have met before, you turn up the key to a mid position, a bit like old fashioned glows. Count to twenty, and then spin over.
No timer.

@Spong
Did you manage to resolve your smoke issue??
Getting there....I was going to wait till I had more to say before I updated, but l've left it with a diesel specialist to look into. I'd have liked to have solved it myself, but there were a few things that just looked like it had fiddled with and not done properly.
So far, they've found that the thermostart isn't working, along with its timer relay (I'd checked that it wasn't dribbling, but not that it was actually working), so they're going to replace that and see where that leads. Hopefully hear more next week....

thanks for keeping us posted have you managed to get compresions tested I hav had to mans that broke a piston ring on one cylinder

You must be a mind reader.... Garage chap has just phoned, said they'd done a compression test and all was well. They're going to take the pump off now and see what's what inside......gulp.

Thought I'd do an update on this, it's been a while but we seem to have achieved closure at last...!

After checking the compression, the diesel chaps took the pump off to see what was what inside, looked OK apart from replacing all the seals in there. Refitted the pump (so probably got the pump timing set up a bit better too) and replaced the buggered cold start waxstat thingy so that it advances correctly when cold.

So, all of the above has resulted in a truck that doesn't look like a very low flying Red Arrow when it goes down the road from cold.

I still don't understand why it didn't smoke when we first got the lorry, given that I'm sure the cold start advance never worked in our ownership (for starters, the 24V supply was disconnected and I didn't do it!), but hey-ho, it works now and life's too short. Thanks for the input on this thread, all.
