I did the thing everyone says you shouldn't do - buy the first car you see. BUT, it had the right 'big bits' done. 4.6 v8 replaced with a Turner Engineering long block with gas flowed heads and a mild cam, new transfer box, stainless exhaust (although only from the CATS back, and it has a LPG conversion. I didn't look too hard underneath as 'they never rot' (and it was on a field which was wet), so went for a small test drive, no knocks or bangs, and brought the car. I had the budget for some repairs/tidying up that I wanted to do (Slight OCD), and guess what........it's giving me a kicking!!
List of bits done so far:
Replaced complete brakes from copper pipe work out, braided hoses, calipers, disks, pads, shot blasted and painted back plates.
Changed all of the oils and filters
Replaced the radiator and hoses
Replaced the trans cooler/hoses
Replaced the oil cooler/hoses
Replaced the thermostat - twice
Had the wheels powder coated
Replaced the wheel nuts for black anodised ones
Removed the crusty/what's left of the side steps
Replaced the AC radiator
Replaced the parking brake shoes and output shaft seal
Replaced the front prop shaft
Replaced the top tail gate for a mint - non crusty one
Replaced the front and rear washer motors

I used the car for about 150 miles to bed in brakes/let everything settle in, when the steering box decided to rust proof the underside by leaking.......badly.
So I ordered a recon steer box, and while I was at it a new drag link and track rod assy. (What a ball ache getting the drop arm off, 25 tonnes and oxy acetalyne)
Got it back on its wheels, the exhaust started to blow, from the cats, so a new stainless (which actually wasn't but it will do) exhaust was ordered and fitted.
Used the car to go between home and work, about 30 miles round trip, and the thermostat isn't opening (not overheating, but engine side of the statis hot, the radiator side is pretty much cold, maybe slightly warm. I check it after serious work as I'm paranoid about cooking the engine)
Drove it 36 miles and the gas unit started to pressurise the coolant system, then leak to atmosphere, then **** coolant all over the floor. So I've got a new gas vaporiser.
So that's my tale of woe, if anyone is still awake!! Next to do is the front radius arm bushes and see if I can find someone to repair/replace the rotten rear chassis cross member where the tow bar bolts to.
The funny thing is, I still love it, even though it wonders all over the road.........
TBC :)

May one ask how many miles this machine of yours has covered and also the age?

You'll now be suffering from PTSD (Post Trauma Spending Disorder).

Nurse will be along shortly:)

Gentlemen,
Please don't assume that Jap = reliability.
I had a Nissan Patrol. The flywheel oil seal went contaminating the clutch. Then the steering tractor seal leaked (similar to LR but the chrome balls are integral with the front axel) thankfully I got away with a new seal.
Then the head cracked hydraulically locking the engine with coolant.

At the same time I had a Terrano swb for offroading. One day it wouldn't start. Fuel getting to the pump but nothing to the injectors and it would have been an engine out job to change the pump. My garage at the time was full of broken down Nissan Patrol so I sold it as a non runner on ebay describing it as dogs' discharge.

Now have a reliable Diisco 300tdi which even if it does go wrong will be cheap and easy to fix. Don't quite know what to do when the tin worm finally kills it though. May defect to a Grand Cherokee.

I looked at a Grand Cherokee on the bay while searching for the P38, it only took a few moments to realise what an ugly, cheaply made, expensive to repair piece of sh1t they are, punched myself for even clicking on it !

How much of your spend was essential maintenance, how much preventative maintenance and how much just new toy syndrome?
I'm the same when i get a project, start a little job then strip it to the bones and rebuild it, like you say OCD tenancies.

In its first week mines had 4 air bags, 2 replacement wings, new side repeaters , full service, steering damper, 20" alloys and new tyres !

I did powder coat the wheels and replace the two rear calipers just because I could and they looked out of place with the new front brakes. Most of the other stuff was either preventing breakdowns in the future, or replacing because it needed it. I was enjoying the experience at first, but it gets boring when you think you have it done (knowing it will require bits over the coming year) but when you drive it for a few miles then something else breaks 😔
But, it's nice to know that it 'should' be reliable once done (I've bloody jinxed it now)
I forgot to add whilst doing the exhaust I disconnected the battery for about two weeks, now have no key fob locking, but that's another thread.😁

It's done 186,000 on a 97 plate (just run in) BUT it has had new engine and transfer box about 40K ago.

I had a hankering for a 5.7 hemi Grand Cherokee, went to view and it developed a strange big end knock the night before, strange..........
