No great surprise becoz I knew the rear crossmember had an area that was touch and go. Tester said its small but too close to the body mount.
Anyway pulled in a favour and a local mechanic who welds is quite happy to do a box section.
Anyway, whilst the crossmember is exposed has anyone experience of these rust stopper products available. 95% of the crossmember is solid but thought a coat of 'something' might stop further trouble down the line.

I hope to keep the old girl a while and am tempted to replace the whole crossmember. I am no welder and would have to get someone to do this but would imagine the labour involved would be steep.

As always opinions gratefully received on the way foward.

the product i use waxoyl, make sure the rust is not coming from the inside out,and take all the loose off first.

Waxoyl will slow the process down but I was wondering if anyone had any experience of the products that are supposed to reduce the rust. Then a coat of waxoyl to keep it that way.

dinitrol this is used by the military so it must be good try some research, there are plenty of products out there,i have used most but really only found waxoyl works, well it worked for me,but then i try and redo mine before every winter.

I have just used some thing called Bonda primer on my chassis, it gets good reports on the web, we'll see how it goes.

Another vote for waxoyl from me. The "underbody seal with waxoyl" on the outside on top of the bonda primer and then black waxoyl on top of that, normal waxoyl thinned 25% with white spirit on the inside of the chassis.

Thanks for that. Did the waxoyl stick to the primer ok, as that seems to be most of the problems that arise with these sort of primers.

No problems so far, I suspect because the "underbody shield with waxoyl" never actually dries out or hardens fully it's still "sticky" so isn't relying on the conventional bond between paint and primer.
This is the first time I've used this particular combination so we'll have to see, I will be monitoring the coating and either way I'll report back to the forum.
