as above whats the best oil to use as im draining al oil out sump etc as head gasket went so synthetic gav says but any particular make etc??
1996 4.0L petrol with lpg conversion

Synthetic oil should not be used in V8's.
Valvoline or Castrol straight multigrade either 10/40 or 20/50.

The engine mechanicals are basically the same as the original V8, i.e Camshaft, tappets etc.
Most important thing is regular oil & filter changes. I wouldn't dream of leaving the oil in for 10000 miles...more like 4000

whats the reason for not using synthetic? some of the other members in here advise to use it? now im confused?

Have a look on RPI website, the reasons are explained in detail.

I have owned and maintained several LR V8's and have never used synthetic or semi synthetic oil and top class independants have also verified this.

I have always used mineral oil either 15/50 or 20/50 that meets the manufacturers specification and changed the oil and filter every 3000 miles.Genuine oil filters are available at cheap prices if you look around,as is buying oil in larger quantites. The choice is yours?

Interesting thread this.....I recently had an oil change, and topped up my 2.5DSE with fully synth Comma 10/40...have I made a mistake?...local Bearmach shop said that I should use it....I thought it might be a bit "thin" for my old duchess...she's got 110,000 under her girdle bless her!....I thought she would have benefited from something a bit more viscous in her belly!??....What about oil additives...Wynns Oil Treatment etc...are they recommended?...Lets hear it from you exspurts.

don't use oil additives, the oil already has enough in it, oil companies spend millions and millions of pounds developing the oils in there specialist labs, at best it will make no difference to it at worst some of the additives will react and start eating your engine from the inside out, if you have an oil leak or a smoke problem fix it! a £5 bottle of snake oil won't help, and don't get me started on slick50 that has ruined more cars than i care to think

All these quack additives are a waste of time and money. They dangle the carrot about less friction means 50% improvement in fuel consumption...get my drift. The major oil companies, if they thought these additives were any good would bring out a super, super "New improved" motor oil at an extra tenner a gallon. After all it's a multi billion industry to them.
Just stick to the reccommended spec. and buy a quality oil that meets it. Putting a top grade oil designed for modern up to date engines will not make a silk purse out of a sows ear...I rest my case!!!!
