Just passing on a little tip I was shown, thats how to check the exhaust gas recirculation valve (EGR) for short on a TD4 Freelander.
Simply start the car from cold but do not rev the engine, as the engine begins to warm up the small pipe from the exhaust to the valve should stay cold. (if not the valve is stuck open)
Once the car is taken above tickover the the valve is opened via a vaccum, this suck for a better word is delivered by the small pipe attached to the valve. the main steel pipe from the exhaust will now start to warm up.
I left mine running on tick over for about 2-3 mins before i increased engine speed.
