Hi, I have removed my starter off my RR 4.0, am I right in thinking that to test it you can connect a pair of jump leads from a car battery to the corrosponding + & - on the solenoid?

If this is right then the starter is completely dead, doesnt turn or spin. Is this more likely to be a faulty solenoid or starter? Or could it be either?

Thanks for any help given

OK, there is one large stud for the positive connection and the frame of the motor is the negative. Connect a battery to these and nothing should happen. There is an additional small stud on the solenoid that operates the solenoid, you need to connect that to positive as well for the motor to run. Unfortunately, that will prove very little. If the bearings are shagged it will run fine with no load. You need to take it apart to really check.
