Terminally I'll Freelander Td4 2004 ?

Can anyone please advise? I have a freelander td4 2002 which I bought new. It has always been a great runner and up until now I have never had any problems. Yesterday whilst on a run to visit family Inotived that thecae 'slipped' in third geAr whilst climbing hill. It continued ok for about 5 miles And then did thesame thing another twice . The engine seemed to lose power and I could only travel at 20 mph. I stopped several times and waited for about 5 mins and the car restarted but still felt underpowered and cut out completely which was very frightening. Th is time the management system light came on. I called the RAC who connected their computer and came up with two codes, P1260 and P1190 which he gold me were fuel pump problems. He was however perplexed as to how the car continued to start Nd turn over for several minutes before cutting out again. I was eventually relayed home but I am VERY worried about having the car repaired because of the cost but even more worried that even the RAC mechanic was not sure of his diagnosis. Has anyone else had this problem. Sorry to go on but I have severe mobility issues
and need to het this sorted as soon as possible. Thank you for reading this.
 
Given the value of this car, and the fact that it is driveable would it not be an idea to get it booked into a specialist for them to have a look at of a morning?
 
my 2003td4 did similar on 76000miles. knocked the pump under wheel arch and it kicked into life-changed the pump and it's been perfect ever since
 
Look at the plug on the end of the fuel rail - they can corrode and give symptoms of low fuel pressure. Gave me about 4 of months of expense and trouble until I finally replaced this plug.
Your lucky you had a RAC patrol who could read your fault codes, I had three different RAC guys on my car and none could connect there readers to my vehicle.
 
The car has done 60,000 miles. My son has offered to replace the fuel filter to see if this solves the problem do you think this is a good thing to do? The car is undrivable at the moment. As you gather I have no knowledge of mechanics and as a 60 year old woman I think it's too late to get any. Thanks for any advise.
 
low pressure pump is built into the same housing as the fuel filter. Just inside the drivers side rear wheel arch. Turn the ignition on without starting the engine, standing next to the drivers side rear wheel can you here the low pressure pump buzzing? This runs for approx 1 minute. If you can't hear it then the low pressure pump is knackered - change filter and pump at the same time.
I would get the plug checked at the end of the fuel rail, if its corroded then this will cause similar problems to the ones your experiencing. Pull it out and spray with contact cleaner. New part costs approx £40 from Land Rover not too difficult to fit.

Is it a 2004 or 2002, your first post states 2004 in the header and 2002 in the post, it will probably make a difference as to where the filter is located, my 2005's filter is located in front of the O/S/R wheel under the body and not in the wheel arch.

Sorry to be a nuisance but can I ask if the fuel rail is easily located so that my son can check the plug. Thanks
 
With reference to the question about the rail I feel really stupid but I've put the wrong year down for the car it's a 2002 model. I think the stress of the situation is getting to me!
 
Get your son to check the fuel pump first. Read the threads before this one. They will help locate it. If that's not doing what it should do, that's the easy one to fix. Any other should be looked at by some one who knows about cars.

Im only suggesting checking the plug and maybe spraying with some contact cleaner if your lucky could be a cheap fix.
I went thru loads of problems after buying my car in January. And I changed the filter plus low pressure pump. Actually phoned the Land Rover dealer who was in the service book this week and he told me the previous owner had brought my car in last October with running problems and they couldnt find the fault - so he obviously sold it :)

As there is a p1260 code it originates from the Low side fuel pressure sensor not the Hp fuel rail so, given the age and mileage, Lp pump is the most likely cause.

Lp system/pumps changed during 2002 to under-arch pump after chassis 2A218130
 
Sorry to contradict you, Chaser but my 02 TD4 has two lp pumps with chassis number 2A393587. It would be interesting to know if any owner has a later 2A serial number with two lp pumps. So, as to checking if the pumps are running with ignition on, try listening under the drivers side passenger floor for the noise of an in tank pump running if the pump in the engine bay is o/k (or not). Eric.

To be honest I don't keep that kind of information, to try and avoid confusion I just googled for an under-arch pump and got the chassis no. from the Famous Four website! :)
