Hi
4.0 Thor, driving yesterday, engine died and dash went off, with lots of associated beeps. Rolling to a stop, dash cams back on and i saw 'gearbox fault' and 'fuse 6 failure' at which point i turned off the ignition.
Turned back on, no beeps or messages and engine started fine with the only evidence of a problem being the radio needed the code entering. Drove fine for the rest of the evening.
Any ideas what i should be checking? A few days ago, when i turned the ignition on, i had a very dim dash with gearbox fault which i put down to a bad earth. I took the earth strap off the battery and cleaned both ends so that should be ok

You're thinking the same thing as me. Earth strap. Didn't they add an extra one to later years? You did the battery end but what about the other end?

That or fusebox. I'd definitely give that a sniff.

That's probably the first thing to do then. It sounds like there was a temporary, total power failure for whatever reason. Check battery terminals are clean and tight and double check your earth connections.

Col

Just to double check, there's a cable from battery -ve to chassis, from that same point to the engine, along with another chassis to gearbox one somewhere. Should there be any others that could be missing? It's a 2000MY if that makes a difference

cheers I'll check that too
how would I check the alternator, just keep an eye on the voltage output? it looks well used (OEM?) so not ruling it out at this point

Right, update time! Not been driven for a few weeks. Kept battery on charge, turned the ignition on the other day and the dash was dead. Tried again a few hours later and the dash lit up as normal.
Started today and went for a drive, engine cut out, dash went dead and left headlight cluster went dead, right hand cluster remained at a normal, healthy brightness.
I'm this must help narrow down the issue, but I've no clue what's in common with the dash, ignition (or injectors) and left headlight
Any thoughts? No bad smells from the main fuse box
Can't be earth if one headlight works ok? Surely?

Fuse box is where I would be looking for starters.
