Could anybody direct me, or even provide a photo, of where the temp gauge sensor is on this engine?

A while back, my gauge stopped workin, and rooting around the engine bay earlier I found a loose green wire. So I earthed it to the injun block, and the temp gauge shot up.

But I cant see for **** where the sensor is, anybody know?

its located at the top front of th engine just to the left of the thermostat, you should see a bronze coloured bolt with a white centre and a little flat peace of metal sticking out! now that whan its clean so get hot water and a brush and give a little clean, you should find it! hope this helps

nice one, thanks. il have a look tomroow when its light. cheers

I don't disagree with you antonyj101 it’s a LR, there are usually variants! But I would have said it was up near the bulkhead on the top between the rocker cover and inlet manifold, I have seen 2 of these engines and that is where it has been.

there was a sensor there, but it cant be that one as the lead was far too short and would have to be stretched over the rocker cover in order to reach there. That sensor had a lead on it already i thought maybe its for an overheating light or something?

The wiring for the temp sensor ends near the bulkhead end of the engine. The temp sender is at the front of my 19J engun near the thermostat. I ran a single wire from the green wire at the bulkhead to the sender to get it working.

nope - it's got a picture of an oil can and a picture of a thermometer, so I'm assumin, nay hopin, that it's an oil temperature gauge.. the other one just has a thermometer on it so I'm assumin its a water temp gauge.. or maybe one is for measurin the temperrature of sommat else?

reet then I ant got no oil can with thermometer idiot light thing just an oil can, an the sender for it is near the oil filter o p sender.JPG an my sender for the temperature gauge is on the left of the head towards the reartemp sender.JPGAN there int nowt near the thermostat.

that is the same as what i thought it mite be, but the loose wire in the engine bay wouldnt reach it. maybe il just add another bit of wire to it to make it longer, and see how it reads.

UPDATE on the oil temperature gauge sender location.

Grunt, in a way you wos right-turns out the oil temperature sender goes into the same hole as the oil pressure sender on the oil filter housing - as a direct replacement. I had neither on mine, but a blanking plug - so was looking for sommat that didn't exist.

Turns out the oil temp sender is the exact same part as the coolant temp sender up on the top of the engine, but on the filter - so hell - EVERYONE was right.

Guess my gauge was just fitted to fill a space!!

the 19j, like the 12j, could have had one of 2 senders. One is in the top of the engine, above the inlet manifold towards the back of the engine - between 2 of the head bolts. This should have a green wire to it. Or, it could be by the thermostat OR in the water pump housing, which is of course at the fron of the engine. There will be a lose green wire hanging around there - this is normal, 1 loom for both variants. If this is earthed, the gauge will shoot up, as both of these green wires are connected together. I spent weeks chasing a cooling/warning system fault, changed the sender, turned out to be the gauge :-D If you need a new sender, i think i have one somewhere, if yours is in the top of the engine. (They are the cheap ones) If its in the front, then they are a few pounds more. Can send some pics if you want!
