Hi all,

I am wanting to replace the temperature sensor on my freelander and according to the Haynes manual it's a relatively simple procedure. However, access seems to be a real issue and I can't see how it's possible to replace this without removing other parts which is not covered in the Haynes manual.

Anyone any advice?

I have just replaced spark plugs, ignition leads and distributor cap/rotor arm as I was having some problems on start up and rough idling. The start up problems have now been resolved but the car still rough idles and sounds like it could stall even though it doesn't.

A friend of a friend who's a mechanic advised me to replace the temperature sensor.

If the guage reads correct then it's not likely to be the temp sensor. Have you cleaned the Idle Air Control Valve (IACV) ?

Hi, thanks for your response. I haven't cleaned the idle valve. Would it be better to replace or could you tell me how best to clean? Thanks.

Give it a couple of squirts of WD40 with the engine running. That normally cleans it pretty well.

Thanks, I read an earlier post of yours that explained how to clean it (and locate it lol). A squirt of WD40 did the trick! I can't believe the difference it's made. Thank you so much for your help.

Okay, the success from the idle valve was short lived. Back to sounding rough again but even worse.

I just noticed that any time I'm under the bonnet with the engine running the fans never operate. I wiggled the cable attached to the coolant/water temperature sensor and the fans started momentarily and then stopped again. I did this two or three times and the same happened. I also noticed that the heat from the engine was higher than I would have expected for the engine to have been running only a few minutes. The temperature gauge inside the car does work and rises to a normal level when the car is running but never gets worryingly high at all.

Is the coolant sensor linked to the engine temp gauge in the car or is this a different sensor.

Could replacing the coolant sensor help the car start better and run better? Also, I fear there may be a loose wire running to the sensor. Is there any easy way to check this?

I'd really appreciate any advice anyone can offer. I'm just about demented searching the boards and other sites for help.

Thanks.

the fans on mine only operate when i've been thrashing the bejesus out of it in summer, so you're unlikely to get them to come on at this time of year.
there are two sensors one for the ecu and one for the temp guage

is the air filter blocked?

I've just checked the air filter and it looks brand new. Prob replaced when serviced in August.
