Hello all,

My temperature gauge is a bit erratic, climbs up to near center then drops again, engine is not overheating and running fine, is this a Thermostat problem?
Thanks.

The TD4 is known to suffer from thermostat problems, but normally that sticks open, preventing the engine from reaching operating temperature. Does yours have the optional FBH? As that firing at random intervals would push the temperature gauge up.

May I just jump onto this post gents? ( apologies OP )

The FBH I found I have the connection plug within the rear wheel arch, what exactly does it do and am I able to retro fit this item if it is still available?

Is there any benefit from having the FBH fitted?

Thanks

Fuel burning heater. It came part of the cold weather option on later FL1s. It's job is to make the heater hotter.

you sure?
Not ever having a FL, I am not going to question you:oops: but I am going too.
The FBH is an extra heater to get the engine up to “best” working temps as soon as possible.

Now if you have the remote/timer it can/will come on and preheat before you even get in the car. It will also be up to operating temps, which will of course as a bi-product give you hot heat in passenger compartment quicker.

That is my understanding

Thought FBH was in front wheel arch but somebody will confirm that who has 1.

Yes.;)

On the year of the FL1 in question, the FBH was part of the cold weather option pack.

The FBH is actually plumbed into the the heater circuit, so the heater warms up faster. It will as a byproduct of the coolant circulation, warm the engine up faster too. The FBH shuts down on its internal thermostat at about ~75°C, so doesn't make heat if the engine is hot.

You can. Oddly my TD4 refused to start unless I gave it full throttle while cranking, if I'd run my FBH to preheat the car/engine.

It's under the front LH corner of the bumper, behind the fog light (if fitted).;)

Gents

Just worked out I have the connection for the additional pump in the rear wheel arch

I think i'll leave it trying to retro fit the item it sounds to much of a faff

Cheers

Regarding my original question, I’ve looked at some of the threads about fitting a new thermostat and leaving the original one in place, does this cause any problems to the system? if not, can anyone recommend a suitable thermostat.
Thanks.
