have just got my series 3 running but have a few queries regarding engine tempature first thing temp gauge not working and i can t find the sender and secondly top half of rad gets hot but bottom stays cold i have changed all the hoses and the stat i dont want to let it run for ages as i cant tell how hot its getting have drained water several times and it seems clean it is a original 2.25 deisel is this just a result of a constant fan or do i have a blockage

Not sure where the s3 temp sender is but it's got to be around the thermostat housing.
The top of the rad should be hot / warm (70deg c issh) and the bottem should be cold (Thats working.)

Temp sender unit on my Series 3 was over No 4 Cylinder on the exhaust side...

Rads should be hot at the top and cold at the bottom, its what they are designed for, cooling water ;)

looks like mine was also above number 4 cylinder until someone decided to replace it with a bolt and cut the wire off thanks for pointing me in the right direction

ah you probably won't need it anyway, they don't overheat much.

One of the reasons for Landies being so inefficient is just that - they don't get hot enough!

Petrol or diesel, these are HEAT engines, and the hotter they run, the better.

i think i have just found the reason the rad is so cold my haynes manual says it should have a 4 vane fan mine has been replaced with an 8 vane fan and each vane has been extended so its like a hurricane when the engine is running the van is fitted with a compressor that runs off the pto and there is a huge oil cooler in front of the rad hence the extra cooling power but once again all advice has been appreciated

I had a 2,25 diesel that had the 8 blade tropical fan and the oil cooler and HD rad . It used to get cooler when crawling uphill flat out in 2nd gear thru the alps than it ran along the autobahn. Mind you thats a few years ago now :D

i dont think the oil cooler cools the engine oil it cools the compressor oil but it does restrict the air flow when the van is moving also when u r using the compressor the van is stationary with the engine running for very long periods any way i have just drilled and tapped the blank that was were the temp sender should be and wired in a new sender and she is running bang on normal not bad for a motor thats been stood in a field for 14 years

That's a classic symptom of chronic OVER - COOLING.
The engine issn't making enough heat to keep warm!

Well Landrover, said that you only needed the tropical fan and oil cooler if you were running stationary equipment in high ambient temps guess it proved em right :D

sorry to bring this one back but have just taken the beast out for its first drive in 14 years thought she was ready but alas it will sit on the drive ticking over for hours and the temp sits bang in the middle but as soon as i drove it the gauge was in the red this was within 300 yards of leaving. the heater is blowing plenty of warm air water seems to be circulting top half of rad is warm bottom cold and there is no signs head gasket is blown so what else can be causing this

the thermostat is new so i think tomorrows first job is a back flush though i will check the stat as it would nt be the first time a new product turned up fooked
