Hi Guys hope you can help, my dad has a freelander with the dreaded 1.8 engine, within the last few weeks the temp sender has shot to the red twice, he knows about the common fault so he immediately stopped the car, when he put the ignition back on the guage was normal, I was wondering if this is a common fault or warning of something worse about to happen. It's an 05 reg, done 40,000 miles or so, regually serviced, never raced about etc.

Don't forget that most modern cars do not have the temp gauge directly driven by the sensor but by the ECU which can produce spurious readings. Poor earthing on the gauge normally makes it overread.

My old Maestro (yes somebody did own one) used to run its gauge off the stops every now and then, found dry joints in the EMU cured by 5 minutes with a soldering iron instead of £80 for a new one.

Just asked the question and he assures me that the fans did in fact come on, any suggestions on what to check?

Thanks in advance.

Assuming sensors are fine (can dig out values if needed) most obvious is failing water pump???

Edit: any air in the head will give erratic temp, check jiggle valve is working by squeezing the top rad hose,,,,,listen for the ball bearing rattling about.

As the FL has the coolant plumbed into the IRD, best to check it has oil and isnt the cause of over heating.
