Hi, I have a 1985 110 csw with a disco 300tdi engine(1995). I've just put a new cylinder head on after a pressure test revealed a crack in the old one. When I first had the conversion done by my local garage, one issue I had was the green ring sensor/sender unit that was in the 300tdi head gave a high reading when connected to the original '85 n/a 110 gauge. I was told this was because the two weren't compatible.
He got round this by fitting the n/a sender into the 300 head, using the 'spare' threaded hole on top of the head because the side thread where it should go was too narrow. It worked!
However, when I stripped the cracked head down for the parts I would need for the new one, I noted that he had butchered the thread on top to virtually jam the sender in because that was also the wrong thread. I don't want that to happen with the new head - I just want to use the correct hole.
I understand there are two units for that head, a green and a black ring.
So, what I'm asking, finally, is do I need the black ring sender to match up to the 110 gauge that serviced the n/a engine, or will I need a more up-to-date gauge?
Thanks.
