Is there a temp guage that will mount in the standard dash but will run from the normal 300tdi sender?

Yes.
A 300TDi one. Dnt have the part number to hand, but - if you have a disco engine, there are two possible senders you can have. If you have a defender engine there is only one. I had the wrong one, (it had a green surround i think) and i had to get the right one (black surround) before my tdi gauge would work.

I was actually thinking of a numbered one as apposed to stock gauge.
But I might just buy the bits. So what gauge d you have in your dash now, a 300tdi Defender gauge?
So I need the defender sender and the gauge I guess - right here comes the question, anyone got any of the bits I need? There is a gauge on ebay but its 50quid!

yus thats what you need, but i aint got one spare. I have both parts fitted though
