Just come down the M6 from Scotland to find the temp gauge running on normal, then within 1 minuete to red hot then back down to normal a couple a minuetes later. This happened several times. Never had this problem before with the bugger. Did a search but it seems that there are lots of solutions. By the way its a 300 tdi
 
first off check rad is hot over core,as this is biggest fault ,then remove both bungs one on rad the other on thermostat housing and check coolant level ,expansion tank is no indicator of level in engine ,allways fill to overflowing excess will harmlessly disappear through cap
