Hi folks, sorry, but can't find what I need on search.

My temp gauge was reading cold, not moving. So did the sender wire to ground thing and got FSD:cool:. So, wiring ok, sensor ****ed.

Replaced Sensor.

Now gauge goes straight to middle on ignition, then scoots past the red after a couple of miles. I'm not overheating and just did 300 miles with no problem and no coolant loss. Going to replace thermostat next, but me guess is the problem lies elsewhere.

Any tips?

Sorry, no quick answer for you.
But very interested as mine does exactly the same on my 1987, 19J...
I just got another temp sender to swap & see if its a dodgy unit?

Anyone else had the same experience & cured it?

you've got the wrong sender ?

The wrong sender? OK.

It look like the old one. Got it from Island 4x4.

Invoice reads Land Rover Defender 300tdi Temperature Gauge Sender.

Hand written number AMR3321 x 1 (not sure if this is a part number or stock number)

EDIT: From ebay;

Landrover Defender Temp Sender

You are looking at a brand new temperature gauge sender unit which fits all Defender 300Tdi models from 1994 to 1999.

The Landrover part number is AMR3321

What was the original engine? Was it a 300TDi? because the sender and gauge are matched - ie if its a 200TDi gauge - you need to use a 200TDi sender.

Ah ha! You may have something here. The bloke I bought it from said the gauge was replaced at some point as the original was faulty. I just assumed this was a story to explain away 20K drop in mileage I found out from an old MOT. If it was replaced, not just clocked, and it was a 200tdi gauge, that could be it!!

New sender it is next then.

Do I have a choice of 200 gauges to worry about too?

Double hang on, just spotted another problem. Stuballsed is an idiot and is now refering to the speedo not the temp gauge:doh:.

Anyway, still have a problem.

p.s. Stuballsed, stop talking to yourself:eek:

****ing computers. You are all spared the longer version of this that just vanished.

Replaced thermostat, Still have gauge problem. Will check gauge is not off of a 200, but my quess is it aint.

p.s. Boiled the **** out of the old thermostat in a pan. Did'nt open, so guess that was a job worth doing anyway, although I did'nt know I have a problem with the thermostat. Will I get some nice surprise now?
