Hi lads, help needed on this one.Temp gauge doesnt move at all on my p38 2.5 diesel 1997.Checked on various forums and I changed single contact sensor but nothing happened.Cleaned connectors under expansion tank, still nothing.Car drives perfectly with no overheating but would be more confident if dash gauge was working

Sounds like gauge sender unit. If you are pre EGR think it's Black sensor on head. Green is ECU temp and Blue for A/C fans on later ones as far as I remember. They are colour coded, earlier models only have the two.

Someone will be along to correct me if I'm wrong I'm sure

Nope. Black sensor at rear of head is only fitted to 1999 and on to bring on aircon fans in the case of an overheat. Temp gauge sensor is at front directly above injection pump and should be either brown (single contact) up to 1997 or blue 1998 on (double contact). ECU temp sensor is green and fitted mid point of head.

Is it the case with these that if you connect the sensor wire directly to the block the gauge should go all the way to the top if it & the wires are in good order?

Thanks for the replies lads. I already replaced the single contact sensor under the manifold and nothing changed. Its the engine with the alloy manifold so no valve. When I turn on the ignition the temp gauge goes to the start of the blue and stays there.I'll try earthing out the wire which goes to the sensor and see what happens. Thanks and I'll come back when I see what happens.A problem that I had with the battery going flat overnight was solved by replacing the relay for the self leveling air suspensions which is located under the left front seat
