As I turn the ignition on, the temp gauge climbs just outside the white. then as I start the engine, the gauge immediately climbs to middle of normal position where it stays whilst I am driving. It makes no difference if I start the engine first thing in the morning or later in the day, it always does the same thing.

Is it the guage, themostat, elec fault ...? Where do I start?

no other guages playing up. And it moves to just outside white as I turn ignition on (whilst engine is still off) and then climbs to central position when I start engine and sit on the drive without moving. All done in about 30 secs!!

cheapest easiest thing to do first is to check the sender connections and if all is well change the sender

Sounds to me like the sender resistor is goosed somehow.
Has it done this since you first had the Landy?
If so it's possibly the wrong sender unit.

But ..... one morning BEFORE you start it up, take the single wire off the sender and make sure it doesn't earth to anything.

Now put the key in and turn it.
What happens?

Now start the engine.
What happens?

If the gauge behaves differently you can start saving up for a new sender.

Make SURE it matches the instrument panel even if it doesn't match the engine.

checked the connection on the sender and it was all corroded. So I cleaned it all up etc and now temp guage works perfect the whole time. Thanks for good advice Sean
