Thinking of buying one of these after the fun and games I have had with my daughters 206 over the weekend :mad:Any way amongst others I did find this

It comes in 4 sizes
2 reversible drive sockets (17mm/19mm & 21mm/23mm)
Am I right in thinking the wheel nuts for a freelander 1 are 22mm? in which case knowing my luck this will be as much use as a chocolate fire guard
 
I also prefer a proper breaker bar. I've broken two of the extendable bars trying to get nuts off that have been done up by 'tyre shops'.

What is worrying there, is how overtorqued were they done up by the tyre shop?

Happy to see Kwik fit were using a torque wrench last time I went in there.

Yeah. Our lass' old Megane and current Nissan when she's replaced tyres. Not actually Kwik fit, it was National which around here have a good rep. I wasn't there when they did them! We now use a local independant tyre fitter, who does the business, cleans the whole wheel when replacing a tyre, wire brushes if necessary. He's even swapped new tyres onto old rims for me ... and does a great job cleaning and re-sealing when I roll them off rims off-roading .. I need some bead locks ... ;)
 
As said above you are much better with a breaker bar. The telescopic ones can flex a little where as the proper breaker vars won't. This flex can reduce the amount of power you are getting to the nut.

Proper breaker bars can flex over their length, but I would have thought neither should flex for the amount of torque required for a wheel nut.

EDIT: plus I would not use it extended to tighten the wheel nuts, where overtightening is a potential risk with the longer breaker bar.

Thank you as always lads for the help I think I am going to get a breaker bar and a 22mm deep socket ,the reason all this came about was because I was changing the wheels on my daughters 206 after sorting out a drop link for her and I snapped the tyre wrench or what ever you call it, trying to get the nuts off :eek:My Freelander is ok but I thought if I have to sort her out might be a good idea if I get one which brings me to my first question are the bolt size on a Freelander 1 22mm?

Depending on length of breaker, do not go hoofting it when using it to tighten the nuts, or you will have a bear of a time to loosen them again. If you have a chance try checking using a torque wrench against a tightened nut to see how much lift you have to apply to achieve the desired torque using it in the future.

Also do not forget a short extension, otherwise you may find the breaker bar has to be at a strange angle to avoid smacking bodywork.

Agreed. I have a cheap clicker torque wrench for up to 120Nm in the Landy for tightening wheel nuts .. (100Nm/80lbft for wheel nuts)

Actually, as well as the breaker bar, I now carry an cordless impact wrench ... only used to run wheel nuts up before tightening .. but easy to undo with!!

I keep one in my FL1 as the standard wheel brace is made of cheese. The FL1 is a 22mm size, so get a single hex deep one off EBay. I've a deep hex 22mm socket that has a plastic coating to protect the wheels. I keep that in the boot too, along with the extending tool you linked. I have altered the bend on mine, as I found it twisted the nut, which isn't what you want.

You are quite right there ,the last thing i want is my nuts twisted:oops: so thanks to the advice on here i think one of these might be a better option
