2005 Range Rover Sport 2.7 Diesel

THE PROBLEM
The car when cold takes a while to select gears then when it’s warm it selects them ok for a while but then goes again till cool then works again. Any idea what the reason could be and possible repair solution?.

I have done some research already and one possibility could be that it requires an oil and filter screen change or could need new control block. However, I was looking for all potential causes from the more knowledgeable members on this Forum who my have come across this or a similar problem before.

Many thanks ;)

I've not bought it but will be arranging to go and have a look during the coming week .....it's guys that buy in scrap cars, mot failures etc but because of its in nice condition have advertised it for sale as Spares or repair detailing what was the problem with it was. The mileage at the last MoT in June 2019 was 158K

P,S, Many thanks for taking an interest Gary :)

At 158k the gearbox should be near due its 3rd service..

If it is on the original oil expect tired Valvebody solenoids, it is common on HP26's that have lead a hard life..

I'd walk away from it..

If the price is right why not, if you have the funds to replace the box and quite possibly the engine that is. Then you have a car that will be good for another 100K subject to the usual electrical problems and suspension joints etc.

Personally, I wouldn't.
You'll buy it, it'll need all kinds if work and you'll be disappointed and disheartened.
Worse case or you'll get it and it needs a filter and oil.
These cars are gotten rid of when they're broken.. We keep a good one.
Your gamble... ;) @Tiger1050

Perhaps they just want to go to the shops?not battle :D:D
Half of living with a LR is learning to deal with the what ifs without stressing yourself into an early grave. With a more modern one budget in good breakdown recovery even if you don’t need it will give you peace of mind.

As per your intro Fred, in my opinion on a limited budget you would have to be very brave to take it on, or a very lucky gambler.

That said, if you really got a good price. If the mob you are buying from break cars ask them to chuck in a lower mileage known good box if they have 1, you may get lucky with the oil change on it, for a while.
If you need to change the box? Do you have space/ somewhere to DIY it or a friendly garage who would be prepared to change an “unknown” box?
Is this needed as your only car?

Then as pointed out already the engine possible issues or mods that will need doing if not done. Does the car come with any sort of service history that you can look through, it may help see what’s been done (or missed ).
When you do see it make sure everything electrical works and no alarms or warnings on dash. Because you don’t want to be chasing electrickery too. Please ensure you have spare in the budget for good diagnostics too, they really do pay for themselves quickly. In your case in would possibly point you to the gearbox issue with a bit more confidence as to what the problem is.
Anybody selling a car that says “ it only needs this little job and it will be good” IMHO is fibbing, otherwise they would do it and sell a perfect running car, so beware!!!

At the end of the day “how lucky do you feel” Some here have gambled and won but it has usually been a bit of a journey for most. If you want a challenge any LR will give it at some point.

Good luck whatever you decide the LZ family will help. Even if it’s only a matter of lightening the moment of stress, or to offer petrol and matches:)

Wow one asks a specific issue question and everyone apart from one Member thinks I'm asking for advice about buying a vehicle ! Well I'm not asking for that, so let's put the record straight,

Firstly, my "limited budget" is only with regard to how much I am prepared to pay for a car, consequently finance for running costs and maintenance won't be an issue even if it meant buying a new box et al.
I'm sure many of you will be familiar with the expression "Don't try to teach your granny to suck eggs" ....well I've been buying, driving and selling my own cars for just over 55 years and only ever bought 1 'lemon' in that time so consider myself fairly experienced.

Off the top of my head I can't remember just how many cars I've owned during that time but 3 off them were automatics, all XJ6's but as the last of those Jags was 1980 my knowledge of automatic boxes (those in the jags were Borg Warner) is now 40 years out of date. Hence my original Question.

Secondly, I currently own 2 fully functioning Xtrails, one driven by my son the other by me. I moved onto 4x4's 3 years ago for 2 reasons, those being a bit of a dodgy hip so ease of access and I photograph Motorsport events, many of which are run on former military bases which are usually located in remote areas with little or no accomodation close by. The Xtrail in conjunction with a 'caranex' provided reasonable camping accommodation, however I decided to see if an RRS or Vogue would provide me with even more space.

I hope the foregoing will now clarify things unequivocally :D

In conclusion I think my next question to the Membership should be "Full written instructions please on how to tie shoelaces" ;):D

Fine that’s straight then:)

So you already know the way forward. Money obviously don’t matter;).

Oil and filters first.
Valve block next.
Complete refurbed box +torque converter.
May even possibly be an electrical issue, nobody can tell yet.

Go for it it’s an easy fix;)

Why oh Why are you having difficulty in understanding my original Question ??

Why oh Why are you having difficulty with my original Question ??

I thought I just did? Answer the route to the fixes available that I know of?

you could try a power flush. Some say don’t as it can make matters worse but if you put that between points 1&2 how can it hurt?

Not directly connected, but my Xtrail was even more unreliable than a Range Rover.
In your position, if the price is right I'd go for it, swap the box and torque converter out and be prepared to swap the engine. Doubtless it will ave or soon develop electronic problems so investing in diagnostics such as Rovacom-IQ would be worthwhile.:D

No @marjon you're giving advice on the way forward, that wasn't my question
.......................so for the avoidance of doubt, I asked for all potential causes from the more knowledgeable members on this Forum who have personally come across this or a very similar problem before.?

For more detailed info on the box you need to ask @Bemble.

Maybe see if I can get the Xtrail engine and box transferred into the RRS if I do decide to buy it as that has run perfectly for the last 3 years :)
