Do you have to remove the front propshaft to get the engine out

Yes & No but you have to remove the half shafts from both sides and the diff.

But I was under the impression turbo replacement could be done without engine removal.

Well done, could you post a few pics of turbos in situ for future reference in case anyone swaps them with engine in car
