Tdi Valve clearance adj, do you bother?

I've had a fair few tdi's but have never got round to adjusting the valve clearances as I've never had the vehicles that long. Do you bother checking /adjusting them as per old pushrod petrol motors or do you just leave well alone?
I assume if they need adjusting thats because the go out of tollerance and there will be a noticeable improvement from doing so?
I can't seem to find any reference to them in the service schedule in my workshop manual???

Yes it does make a difference. Worth doing when you change cam belts. Not really needed any more often than that.

I find the seal leaks and needs replaced - so I do it when the cover is off anyway.

I find it does make a audiable difference, if its sounding a bit tappety at warm idle, then I would say give them a go (check the oil first).

I had my rocker shaft off at the weekend, stripped it down and cleaned it up, relubricated it with a smear of moly here and there and put it back in after retapping a thread in the head and even after all that the clearances were fine. So I would say cam belt change time would probably be a fair service interval for them. I think on my 2.5NA it called for them to be done every 12,000miles.

Land Rover engines were well designed, and they tend not to let the clearances change in use.

The clearances get too small when a valve sinks into the valve seat. This is most unlikely in a Landy diesel engine.

Every other wear factor tends to make the clearances bigger over time.

Set the lot now to 0.008" Inlet and about 0.010" exhaust, and you may never have to do it again.
