You need to count the number of splines on you current steering wheel and buy another to suit.
Not all are the same, some are 36 spline some are 48 from memory.
If you have a search their is a good guide out thier of which wheel is what. I just don't know how to add a link from phone.

Removal is easy, one 22mm nut in the middle of wheel, give it a good yank and off it comes.

Post 07 48 spline. From MY 14 they changed how the self cancelling of indicators worked.

So go for 07-13 if you want to have self cancelling working.

To prevent getting steering wheel in your mouth which could be painful.

Undo the central nut a couple of turns but leave it on. Tap steering wheel up until it it is loose. Then take the nut off and remove the steering wheel.

Thank you aaronmorris and
leeds for your replies that sounds like something i can do which is good! Having searched mine is 36 spline. The steering wheels i like are all 48 spline. Is it a case of fitting a boss to convert? is that easy?

Maybe being naive but why would i get steering wheel in face?

It happened to me, trying to get the steering wheel off my Defender. Took off the nut and pulled....nothing. Gave it a good yank and it shot off the boss and hit me clean in the face.

I would recommend buying a steering wheel puller, they are very cheap, around £5 - £10 on ebay and make the whole job 1000x easier! No getting a steering wheel to the face!

Flossie's tip of the day!
(Apart from avoiding a wheel to the face moment)
Mark the splined shaft and hub so it goes back on exactly how it came off otherwise you'll be fitting and removing multiple times until you get it right.
I found that to be most annoying:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Thanks for advice guys. Sounds like I have to look for a 36 spline option? I like the leather post 2007 tdci steering wheels though and nice td5 ones I can't find....

Really struggling to find a good td5 steering wheel..not to keen on the sports types. Any ideas of where I could find a better condition than my current one?

Thank you for the tips on how to avoid a dodgy black eye!
