Hi guys, I'm new on here so please be gentle!

I'm currently doing the rounds looking for either a sub 100k TD6 or 4.4 V8 lpg rr. I've set myself a budget of no more than £14k and have seen a few decent looking motors online though nothing that near to me in Perth/Scotland. As I only do about 8k personal miles a year then fuel economy is not that much of an issue. I've had a look at the various threads on here regarding mpg and I think I would be right in saying that the lpg V8 works out at only slightly better value for money fuel wise? From what I've seen I can get a pretty tidy HSE or VOGUE for about £2k less than the equivalent aged and mileage TD6. I know all the pit falls with LPG so will not entertain any RR without a half decent drive away warranty.
What I'm really looking for is your opinions on what is the better buy, petrol with the LPG or the oil burner?

I've thinking along the lines of something similar to this (both not that far from me)

Thanks guys!

This has been covered in one guise or another a number of times on this forum, do a bit of a search and then if you still aren't sure, come back and ask again.

In a nutshell my opinion is: Go for a petrol one if you are doing low milage, the engine and transmission is less problematic, it is way more powerful and sounds much nicer. Get a Vogue as they re-sell much better (call it badge snobbery if you will, but its true). If you can get one with LPG already fitted then go for it, but with the milage you are talking about it wouldn't be economical for you to get one retro-fitted yourself.

Hi Saulmac, welcome to forum.

I was in a similar position to you about 3 months ago. I found a dealer who had a TD6 and a 4.4 petrol with LPG and test drove them both. I preferred the 4.4 LPG (smoother, quieter and more powerful) and bought it. I cant tell whether its running on petrol or LPG (it changes over from petrol automatically when the engine is warm enough). It costs around 18p per mile when running on LPG (on a run) which I think will be similar to the TD6.

Why dont you test drive one of each and see for yourself.

the 4.4 V8 is 100% better and more reliable engine/transmission wise than the TD6 the V8 uses the strong ZF gearbox where as the TD6 uses the weak GM autobox, just search the internet and you will find lots of posts regarding problems with the GM transmission thats in the TD6. The V8 is a completely different car compared to the TD6 power wise is got all the up and go that these cars need the TD6 is very lacking on power when you need it most e.g. roundabouts etc... check my site out www.myrangerover.co.uk for a long pre purchase check list. Also if you like your toys e.g. Sat nav, TV, heated steering wheel etc.. then you will wont the VOGUE spec as the HSE is the low spec model and you CANNOT upgrade a HSE to a VOGUE spec as they have completely different wiring looms, the VOGUE will also hold its money better than the HSE and almost everyone want the VOGUE spec, if you get a HSE you will always kick yourself you didn't get the VOGUE.

There great cars so Good Luck!!

Matt

load of old tosh, get a td6. i got one and had it remapped, plenty of power and a nice 33mpg to go with it. like i said times many aswel, the gearbox is only a problem if you like to pull away at 100mph. the v8 also has its fair share of box and engine trouble, look over on rangerover.net and find out for yourself.
