Have just been told I have head gasket gone or more likely head crack in my 51 plate td5 commercial this Landry is a farm vehicle and needs to work but not top road performance been quoted £1000 for head gasket £2500 if head needs replacing has any body any thoughts please:confused::confused:

Sounds like a lot of money to me,

I take it you can't do it yourself? I would have thought about £500 for a good indi garage to do the gasket and IF it needs another head I would put a good recon one on, another £300-£500 .

Hope that helps.

A Land Rover independent in the south just did my '02 Td5 head gasket. Head gasket and work (inc. parts, consumables, head pressure test and skim, visual check 1 week later) was £1200.

I was lucky and the head passed it's pressure test when sent away. If I had needed it, they did say a new Turner head was £1200+vat.

While they were at it they did the water pump for £75.

Happy with the work, it runs better and smoother now!

Unfortunately head work on these engines can get expensive very quickly. Don't be tempted to skimp on a pressure test, it's a lot of work to do and then find you're still pushing coolant out. I assume you have a cooling issue, rather than diesel in the sump, this too is often caused by a crack in the head around the fuel 'rail' in the head casting, although we've had a couple of customers who've been lucky and just needed injector seal. Good luck anyway......

Have head pressure tested turns out ok , so new head gasket and injector wiring loom and my disco td5 is up running around the farm the only problem I can say is when first starting the engine seems to surge until warm?
