I have found a 2001 TD5 ES for a good price. The quality seem high, low levels of corrosion, good chasis etc etc.

But, what about the TD5? If i am looking for a cheap toy which i can modify, fix up, use offroad etc, should i really stick to a 200 or 300, or are the TD5s not that bad?

body normally better on TD5 and chassis is usually the problem especially the rear.

it is longer in the rear and you have more overhang for off- roading to watch out for, also standard wheels are usually larger and therefore less range on tyres so perhaps budget in to fit 16" wheels.

engine wise i have read good and bad reviews so i guess it depends if you have got a good one.
they have more electrics than a 200/300 that is for sure and are slightly heavier of fuel.

having driven a defender 110 with a td5 in i didnt think there was any improvement in perfromance over the 300 in my opinion but i have never owned one.

also ES model will have air suspension that can cause issues, ACE i think its called but you will have to searcvh for more details.

search and you will find threads answering this question before.

ES is nice spec though :)

for the red part the answer is definately YES , the D2 Td5 ES is a well equipped vehicle with electronically managed enhancements like SLS(self levelling suspension), ACE(active cornering enhancement), electronic dual digital aircon, etc. which needs special care and preventative maintainance otherwise it can be a nightmare especially if you are not technically skilled... BUT a well serviced and perfectly working D2 is a real joy to ride and very capable off-road too(the SLS has an off-road mode which will lift the back on button with around 50mm and an extended mode which automatically inflates the bags if the chassis is grounded...also the ACE will keep it from leaning with a hydraulic system which works at 135 Bar for that

think well cos you'll pay more for the enhancements of an ES then if at the first glitch of one of the enhancements you'll surrender and decide to get rid of it and convert to conventional you'll pay more money for that work and end up with a kind'a nicer D1 with Td5 engine on which you wasted a lot of money

200/300 IMO, defender TD5 is good off road as long as you keep it out the deep mud and water, but disco you've got so many electrics as said.

:)
