TD5 won't start!!!

Hi all, I have a 99 TD5 with starting issues, i.e. it doesn't! runs on easy start til it's gone, I've got fuel all around the system at all the pipe connections. all the injectors fire on the diagnostic computer, but it seems like the injectors are refusing to inject any diesel into the engine. I'm convinced it's a fuel pressure problem and the pump is shot, but before I go replacing the pump, is there anything else I can check? Any help appreciated.

Hi,

Can you disconnect one of the fuel pipes at the FPR and see how much flow you have?

I have disconnected the high pressure line at the fpr and to be honest, I would've expected quite a jet of fuel, considering that the pump should put out at least 5 bar and the pipe is only 6mm internally. There didn't seem to be that much pressure there. I've rigged up a test valve, so I'll get back to you with the pressure readings. I'm about to fit a new filter momentarily, although it was replaced earlier this year, but you never know.

Wouldn't have thought it was the crankshaft sensor, as the engine does run on easy start quite happily, but of course, I could be wrong!

I had a pump go, interestingly straight after changing the fuel filter and purging the system. It started , ran for 10 minutes then died. When I checked the flow it was only pumping at the lo flow rate not the hi rate, I swapped it for a spare working unit and the difference was very noticeable.

while running on easy start the engine management is not involved at all, it's only a simple internal combustion thing...if it's manual try to bump start it and if it starts that way we'll speak then, not the case for an auto, also measure voltage on the battery while cranking, if it drops below 10.5V the ECU might not open the injectors, the starter will happily spin while the voltage drops even to 8V

Avoid using easy start but sounds like the pump?

Guys can you just unscrew the water tap thing on the fuel filter to see flow when ignition the ignition is on?

You can undo it, but does not prove the Hi Pressure side of the pump is working.

I've tried tow starting it with no luck, but surely the ecu would throw up a fault if the crankshaft sensor wasn't working? I've had another vehicle connected to my landy whilst cranking it over, so no loss of voltage. New VDO Siemans pump on order, if that doesn't sort it, I'll probably give it to you lol! I've spent a fortune on it recently, replaced the rear chassis and brake lines etc. I can't understand how it can be running fine friday, parked it up, Monday morning, cranks over fine but doesn't start?? Just landrovers I guess!

The crank sensor doesnt log codes all the time, also the fact that other vehicle was connected to the battery can be irrelevant cos iff the problem is with the starter motor the voltage will drop anyway, as long as you didnt measure voltage this is not ruled out nor if it's manual and you didnt try to bump start it... cos you strill didnt say what transmission it is

Sorry, it's manual. Whilst turning the engine over, I measured voltage at the pump 12.6 v. So I'd assume that the voltage everywhere else would be good too. Towed the vehical in gear for about 5 mins but no go.

Then these are ruled out, if you have tester read the engine speed while cranking, it should be above 250 to start
