Do l need the great big propellor on the engine for normal UK road use?

Some say that it's not necessary even when towing in UK temperatures. Has anybody run their TD5 without it fitted?

Don't know about the TD5, but certainly can get away without one in a TDi. Any particular reason you want to get rid of one? TD5s don't need as much tinkering as the older units, so you shouldn't have to remove the cowl as much!

I ran my 200 tdi for a week without a fan during the summer here in France once where the temperature rose to 34 degrees C.The temp gauge went up to just outside the red on a long steep hill. I was glad to get the fan back on just for piece of mind. I have ran it for a couple of years with a Kenlowe electric fan but have now reverted back to the viscous fan. Just as a matter of interest, why do you want to run it without a fan? I have heard of all sorts of claims about electric fans increasing your mpg and quicker warm up times etc. But I never noticed any difference what so ever.

Run my TD5 with no fan through the winter. Its a bit quieter and maybe warms up slightly quicker. I would be paranoid about cooking the engine with out the fan in the summer....

I thought it might reduce noise levels and give a bit more MPG without it fitted?
Mine seems OK, there's no play and it turns easily by hand with some resistance but l can hear the roar as it starts up, within a half mile of setting off in the Defender.

I'd read on another Land Rover forum that it was "unnecessary in the UK" (when referring to the TD5 engine in a Discovery)

Considering the amount of clatter you get from the TD5, and the amount of energy used just dumping heat into the environment, I doubt if the fan makes much difference. However, the engine is likely to be a bit sensitive to overheating (blown gaskets, warped head etc.) so I doubt if I'd risk it given the time and cost of the possible consequences!

Fit an electric fan and stat. You can get a good electric fan from any FWD car in a breakers for not a lot and I can give you a part number for a cheap stat.

Once the viscous fan warms up it's only ticking over and I find you don't hear anything from it. As I mentioned earlier, I never noticed any difference in mpg when I ran mine with the Kenlowe electric fan. I took the electric off as I was concerned when it got hot if it was going to trip in. The electric did work well last year when I did a trip across the Sahara and came on often when worked hard in soft sand or going up long steep hills through the Atlas mountains. I took it off as I had to change the Rad and I was never happy with the way the electric fan was attached to the rad. I feel much happier with the Viscous back on. Now ready for another trip in Spring 2016.

You can hear the electric coming on in the clip below
