Hi, new to the forum so hi everyone, I have just bought a '99 TD5 gs, with 100k on it, 1 local owner truck from new and its in superb condition. What a find, EXCEPT, took it down the motorway the other night and let her have it more than normal, and have got a horrible vibration/shudder at anything above 75mph. Its not real bad, just such a contrast from how smooth up to 75. Tried driving through it up to 110!, still there, slightly worse. Being a mechanic myself i have checked all prop joints, doughnut at rear axle, prop balance weights etc. Run it up on wheelfree and cant find anything untoward, tyre runout looks good, (4 new Goodyear Wranglers on her 6 months ago), and defo too high speed for wheel balance i would have thought. Help if you can please, don't want to get p#*sed off with her so soon, its what i wanted to replace my 300 for ages and now missing her. Cheers.

My guess would be propshafts, but you say you have checked them.

As its a 99, it has a CDL in the transfer case, remove either the front or rear propshaft, lock the CDL with a 10MM spanner and go for a spin in 2wd, that will 100% eliminate the props, do it for both front and rear in turn. GO EASY when accelerating up to speed as your only in 2wd, but its a good way to test it all out.

My guess is that removal of 1 off the props will most likely stop it (probably the front prop). If that prooves fruitless, have a good look / check / feel of the wheel bearings both front and rear.

/\/\/\ Spot on but also you can only completely check propsshafts by removing them as the joints also sieze up through lack of grease and thus do not have any play in them initially.

i think knob might be a bit harsh, i wouldnt have taken it it up to that speed if it was a dangerous vibration, thanks for your help ahole.

hi mate i have a 2001 td5 auto which does the same , have changed gear box as that broke, rebuilt front prop, and output transfer bearings and it still vibrates like a pig , only did the ujs 3 of them but theres a ball joint between the 2 front ujs which cant be replaced , so its a new one next , think you prob sounds the same ! whats seans prob ?

I have a 2002 TD5 and it used to vibrate at 70+, I tried all the usual things like greasing all the nipples, replacing the doughnut and it was reduced, but finally had all 4 wheels rebalanced and now she sails along majestically at all speeds without vibrations.

I would try another wheel balance if I were you?

had the same problem with my td5. turned out to be o/s/r out of balance. Used to come in at 70 couldn,t even drive through it as really bad Amazing the change after a good balance, need someone who.s good to get it spot on.

thanks mate , got car back from garage today, like i said had gearbox replaced, i had changed the ujs on the front prop before but didnt do anything with the ball joint apart from clean it and regrease it . just took it it off tonite and the ball joint has completely bust up so i may have at last found the prob !!!

:):) Hi everybody, just thought i'd let you all know i've cured my vibration, had all 4 wheels balanced yesterday and did a motorway run last night, she's smooth as silk! I can't believe it was wheel balance at 75mph and upwards, but its definitely cured it. Well chuffed! Thanks to everyone for their help and suggestions, (except Sean), just wish i'd had them done sooner! Proves that you should always start with the simple things and not always look for a bigger problem. Could have thrown alot of money at it for nothing. Anyway, thanks again.

I totally agree with the wheel balancing. My tyres were on the way out and I had a really bad vibration at 70+, had the doughnut done, bit better but not much, bit of a placebo effect, i think. Anyway, new tyres and rebalanced and absolutely bob on. Almost spent a fortune fannying about with stuff I didn't need to :D

Did say it was "most" likely the front prop, BUT even if you replace the centering bearing, "if" the spigot on the shaft is worn AT ALL, then a new bearing won't help as it will still vibrate and the ONLY resolution is a new front prop.

Ive got the same problem on my 99 discovery V8i..ive had a NEW genuine landrover front prop fitted..all wheels balanced and rotated and ive just had a NEW genuine landrover rear prop and donut fitted after reading ALL the post on here,Ive still got the same vibration at over 70mph after spending over £700...SO there you have it,yer stuck with the vibration like it or not????...i'll never own another one of these for sure..buying a vibration free L200 next..
