Td5 valve lifter test.

Hi all. I've a problem with my 2004 defender. It makes a popping noise out of the exhaust and is smokey. I changed the injectors maf and
turbo. My next step it to take the head off. Is there a procedure for testing the valve lifters/ backlash adjusters. I want to see if one of them is seized. Thanks in advance.
