Hi

Never had this problem before on a Land Rover, my Disco Td5 is eating away the inside of the tread on the front tyres.

Any help or advice as I'm a bit loath to take it to be checked as in the past with car's it's not made a sh*t of difference.

Thanks in advance

I'd say that it may be a track rod end or track rod itself is bent if it's doing both tyres.

Cheers Ratty

Checked ball joints/track rods and all's good! been doing it for a while as the spare is worn on the inside too!

Gunna take it to have the tracking checked next week.

Had the tracking checked this morning-everthing spot :)

I've only had the vehicle for a couple of months so don't know whether it was out and has been corrected since.Suppose the only way to tell is to put some new tyres on and see if the scrub!

Cheers

Jason

I put some second hand tyres on, 5 months later and 5k + the bastides still wearing on the inside :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Made a bar up with threaded rod and measured my mates toe out on his TD5,1.5 mm ish, then measured mine, the same as.

The book says 0 to 2mm toe out so I have closed mine to O & swapped rear tyres onto the front.

Any thoughts? other ideas?

Kin pishes me off when tyres wear like this, my last TDI used to do 50k + on the same set of tyres with all the same wear.

Wheel bearings, shock absorbers?

Now I think he needs to check the CAMBER of the wheels VERY carefully.

If either a top or bottom balljoint (hub swivels) is loose or slack or worn in any way, the whole wheel and tyre can lean IN at the top, and out at the bottom, and that is likely to scrub the insides of the tyres.

You need to find a dead flat and level place, and use a really good spirit level held vertical to find out whether the wheels are cambered IN or OUT. Tyre pressures should be correct, and you should check both sides several times after rolling a quarter of a tyre turn each time.

POSITIVE camber is when the TOP of the tyres are OUT relative to the bottom. \ /

NEGATIVE camber is when the BOTTOM of the tyres are out relative to the top / \

USUALLY, cars including Landies are set up with some POSITIVE CAMBER. The spirit level should lean OUT at the top - but take care if the fat tyres are bulging near the bottom.

If your one shows ANY signs of NEGATIVE camber, there's possibly a problem the experts haven't found, relating to camber. Jack it up and check the swivels.

Thanks Charly.

Will check camber with a spirit level. Not found any play in swivels or else where for that matter but am going to have to get to the bottom of this.
