TD5 Time Taken to Warm Up

Having recently purchased a 1999 TD5 I have noticed that compared with other vehicles I have owned the temperature guage seems to take a long time to get to temperature.

The obvious cause to look at first would be to test the thermostat however before I do this could anyone give me any idea how long it should take to get to temperature or suggest a way of testing the thermostat without removing it from the vehicle

My TD5 auto with the viscous fan took about 7 mins to warm up but I have replaced the fan with a kenlow fan and it only takes 5 mins now and there is alot less noise from under the bonnet now.

I have the same problem with my 2002 defender..iv talked to a few ppl with td5's (discos and defenders) and they all have the same problem even ones only a few years old. I wonder if its just nearly 20 litres of fluid in the engine to warm up. Thats alot of energy!
Anyway I recently replaced the Thermostat in mine and new coolant and it have seemed to have helped the warm up time. The old thermostat definatly had less resisitance than the new one.

We live at the bottom of a long hill so my 1999 TD5 warms up pretty quickly as the engine is doing some work. I have noticed that the gauge shows tepid for a while then suddenly goes up to the half way mark, so I suppose the sender is on the far side of the thermostat (?). If so the engine may be warmer than you think.

Dunno about Disco's but I know defenders have a young aeroplane propeller in the front keepin everything cool. Maybe fitting a leccy fan'll help speed up the warm up process. I think however the viscous fan is a better option i.e. one less electric fault to worry about LOL

By the way i agree heated seats r for pussys :boink:
 
You would not say that if you come out to cold leather on frosty mornings, Or indeed suffer from a bad back,

they are a great toy imo
