Td5 ticking, scored cam

Hi all, i have just finished a landybuild, (td5) took her out for a spin and there is a new ticking sound appeared in the engine, it sounded top end, there is no relation to anything other than the engine, it wasnt any pullys, so i popped the rocker cover of and found that the 5th cylinder cam was scored quite bad and had a little chunk missing from the big cam.

Would this be related to the ticking ?

do you think it would be ok if i replace them with a used good one's (camshaft and rocker shaft.
Would the shells from the camshaft in atm be ok or would i have to replace them, as i cannot find them on the web ?

the only problem with a used cam would be the shells , ideally you need a cam with matching shells or new ones , I think turners can supply new ones

Turner cam shafts are £350 and doesnt say they come with the shells?
Ebay used cam shaft £50

my thinking is that a used rocker should be fine as it just bolts down.

Ohh ok, so it will just be a case of ringing turners up and ordering some of them

should be yes , that's what id do as that chunk is quite bad

they dont use shell bearings just machined in to head and carrier ,id just polish cam journals fit and check cam feels ok then rebuild fully

Well i suppose thats better then ( less money to be spent

I know that this problem wants to be rectified but am not sure if it was the ticking/clicking sound as it was quite loud, ( could hear it over the revs )

It was at its easiest to here once the engine had been reved and it was dieing back down to idle, you could here the ticking slowing down with the revs

does it sound exactly the same time as engine or half engine speed?

polish journals of you new used cam when you get it ,hard facing cracking up like that could cause ticking , squeeze each lash adjust in a vice using soft jaws before rebuilding

it definatily sounded half or slower than engine speed as you could distinguish the tick tick tick

cam related then , cam turns at half engine speed

would it be ok if i just put it back together and drive it for a bit as i want to go to billing next weekend and doubt i will get it done by then ?

it only going to get worse and score more but i will be replacing it anyway ?

be careful no bits of that cam break off , you don't want metal shards in your oil

What did you mean buy squeeze the lash adjusters in the vice , i think the second hand replacement will have adjusted in it ?

And as for the bits, the oil should be top notch as i cleaned the sump out completely and it has new oil and genuine filter.
i also run some wynns tappet quiter oil though it earlia

I fitted a new injector harness last week and sadly discovered that I have a similar problem on one injector rocker and corresponding cam lobe.
Just looking around now to get parts as I might go with a used cam shaft if I can find a good one and a and new roller
Questions
If you release the cam shaft do you need to fit a new head gasket?
My engine is P15 (2001) are the cam shafts all the same on all TD5 units?
