I notice that thermostats for the TD5 have slightly different numbers - PEM100990, PEM100990R and PEM100990K. Dose anyone know what the differences are if any?

The letters at the end are maunfacturer specific for aftermarkets of the same part, if you want something reliable get only genuine PEM100990LR or if you dont want to pay for that then PEM100990G which is OEM and cheaper ... all the others are sh*t

When they fail do they stick open or closed? Our car has always taken a long time to warm up. I have always wondered whether the thermostat opens at the right temperature. The coolant is overdue for changing and I thought I might change the thermostat at the same time. A cheap aftermarket one would answer the question for around £12 but the genuine ones are three times the price with no guarantee of making any difference. I might try a cheap one and if it makes a difference then good. If it doesn't last long then at least the question has been answered and then I don't mind splashing out on a land rover badged one.

Cheap aftermarkets can fail both ways in no time, it's not about making a difference on how the engine warms up, the risk is to get stuck closed then you might end up like a friend of mine with burned head gasket... td5s are all warming up hard that's how they are
it is normal. Mine needs about 10km during winter time (0'C) to reach the operating temperature.
new cars even worse. My one year old Opel Astra (company car) starts heating only after about 20min. Fortunatelly I have heated seats in it.

That's why i retrofitted a FBH in mine and even so i remove the viscous fan for winter as i'm doing only short journeys, i keep it in the boot though and watching the additional coolant temp gauge so if i see that it's needed i fit it back in no time
