hi

my defender 90 td5 has a few problems when you key off there is a groaning sound from under the bonnet sounds like it is around the footwell?

also it is loosing coolant and the heater will go from hot to cold as you are going along ?

it is also a little rough running over idle too

have replaced injector loom already and cleaned ecu plug

does anyone have any ideas?

thanks in advance

Hi.
The strange noise needs some more info, which side, how far down etc as I'm struggling with that one. It could be the centrifugal oil spinner.
Have a very good look around for signs of the coolant loss as it is possible for the cylinder heads to crack in the inlet ports and for pressurised coolant to be sucked into the engine and burnt. If so this has happened the only long term fix is to replace the cylinder head. It is possible to test them, but it's done with the head off and on the bench. So it's best to rule out all other places for leaks. A pressure test of the system may help to see external faults. I have had problems with a customers disco TD5 leaking from the heat exchanger on the offside, that cool or warm the incoming fuel. A kit is available to reseal them or fit a secondhand one. as new ones are a bit pricey.
The heater going from hot to cold is likely to be air in the system. Bleed it to the highest point after refilling and don't be tempted to not add enough anti freeze as the blocks do corrode internally.
If you have had oil in the loom getting to the ECU and you have replaced the engines internal loom I would suggest checking the loom again and opening some of the wrap around the end plugs as the oil can take sometime to exit. I try and leave them with a bit of a U bend to allow the oil to drip off as it comes out. Careful opening of the ECU may show it's got inside. It can be carefully dried out.

Good luck

ok so coolant loss could even perhaps be airlock? i have only had the vehicle a few weeks so not sure what has been done before i have had it and as for the loom have checked a few times now and looks all ok i did strip the ecu and there was no oil in there but oil in the wlug which i washed out and i put a bend in the loom so the oil would have to go uphill to the ecu so drips off into the bottom of the seatbox instead and i always use plenty of antifreeze as i have known tractors to freeze up i have an antifreeze checker to make sure there is sufficient and i will have a look to see exactly where the noise is coming from but sounds like drivers side footwell

Evening,

I also have strange noises on my D2 TD5 when turning off. It sounds like some bellows closing or a flap shutting with a creaking noise when turning off. It comes from around the drivers foot well (on a RHD car). I was thinking it may be the climate control closing a flap and I haven't had a chance to look at it yet. I did manage to fix the control arms at the weekend on the heater box but the noise predates this. I will have a good look at the weekend and let you know what I find.

No ACE on my very late Landmark. I have had a couple of TDi's , both Disco and Defender but have never heard a noise like this. It doesn't sound like the end of the world, just rather strange! I'm wondering whether I can record it on my phone and post it on here. Will give a few of you a laugh as it really sounds like a fart!!

I had a similar thing with the heater. It was loosing coolant through the cap on the tank and getting air locks.
