Am i right in thinking the steering box oil is dexron 111 ,,same stuff as for the transmission fluid?? thanks :)

I think its cold climate fluid, but dex 3 will do!
The cold climate fluid fluid is even thinner than dex.
Less than 10 quid a litre, so wont break the bank

ATF DEXRON 111

I stopped using ATF in the steering box as I’m convinced it attacks the output seal causing leaks. I’m on my fourth PAS box due to leaks. All until now ran on ATF. I’ve run this one for a few years now on Fuchs PAS fluid and it is totally leak free.

The only PAS fluid approved by LR is Texaco 14315 (#STC50519) as per attached technical bulletin. It's commonly available under other brand names such as Ravenol for 1/2 the price of the genuine stuff.

No dear, ATF to the Dexron spec wouldn’t be responsible for power steering leaks. My D1 still has the fluid it left the factory with, 23 years ago. So not leaked or had an replacement parts requiring me to purchase any ATF .

U wouldn’t expect a LR Genuine parts box to leak although my RR box was replaced by the main dealer because it had worn output shaft seals after 8 years at around 80k miles.

I respect your opinion and experience, even though your reply is a tad patronising ;)

23yrs on the same oil!

What a cheapskate! :D
If it was the service schedule i’d replace it like I do with all the other fluids.

But there’s nothing in the D1 service schedule on replacing the fluid and it was never changed in the first five annual main dealer services it had, don’t remember it being replace in my RR either, which was always a main dealer service and sometime twice a year.
My six year old Jag service schedule states a change a 30,000 miles so i’ll see what happens next year, when it has its Jag service.

Anyway it wouldn’t take long to to a fluid replacement so may have a go, but i don’t expect anything will be different after it’s done:)

There has to come a point where the oil has no goodness left in it?

I would be sceptical about service schedules. Manufacturers like to sell parts.
I used to change the PSF on my 90 every few years, and it looked dirty when it came out.
On my car now, I don't know if there is a recommended change interval, and I can't be bothered to take off the shields and gubbins in order to look for a drain plug on the power steering rack, which may not exist anyway.
So I use a small plastic tube to siphon out the reservoir of PSF, and replace the contents of the reservoir with clean fluid.
Do that a couple of times a year, it must be changing 90% of it every few years.
Fluid is cheap, power steering components aren't.

nope red and spec is dexron 3.......

If it's red, it's very likely that you have ATF. If it's green, the chances are that your either have the recommended fluid or a CHF variant (CHF11S or CHF202).

IMO CHF11S is the better of the two, but for me and where I live dex3 has been better, only ever pulled pumps and boxes with dirty green never red,
