My 2001 td5 broke down a few weeks ago it was turning over but not starting, I carried out a fuel purge and could hear a hissing noise by the fuel pressure regulator. I changed this and now no hissing. It had some oil at the ecu so I changed the injector loom and cleaned the ecu. so it now reluctantly starts and runs ok for 10 to 20 seconds then cuts out and wont start again unless I leave it for a couple of hours. I changed the fuel pump about 18 months ago (I hope its ok), and fitted a new fuel filter with the complete filter housing last week as the old housing was old and corroded. Can anyone advise the next step?

As so often with these vehicles, the battery needs to be totally up to snuff and the connections on, good and tight, earths all checked too.;)

The battery did need help, it's on charge now so I'll try again tomorrow and double check the Earth's, Thanks for the info
It has to be said that these vehicles, like so many if not all modern cars, are incredibly sensitive to the state of the batt.
Crossed fingers for you.

Weak battery would not let it start at all IMO, once started the alternator(if it's working) kicks in so there should be enough voltage to keep it running regardless of the battery. As you changed the filter head the air bleed valve is ruled out so unless it's a management issue the injector copper washers are the next suspects but if you say there's no hissing sound at the FPR while it's purging the pump is suspect too cos it can run only on LP, for that do this test Check Td5 fuel pump HP

Thanks for the advice, I can easily check the voltage at the fuse, no HP would sort of make sense, I have also ordered a Fuel pressure tester and injector seals already so I will update once they arrive and I have fitter/tested them. I think it is good also to check the new air bleed valve, this was an original part so I never checked it was good before installing.

@sierraferry, Thanks for the info on the other post, the injector seals and washers are about two years old, I have another set so maybe should go ahead and change them again, if only to rule them out.
I will check the fuel pump first though, it's also pretty new, maybe one and a half years but was an aftermarket part ???

Would be good to plug in a diagnostic tool though before you change seals or other things cos it's still possible to be a management issue so better rule it out... the symptom is specific for topside switch or crank signal failures which are not uncommon. What's sure is that you must hear an intermittent hissing sound at the FPR while the purge is running if the pump works well

Hi all, so, I checked the voltage at the fuel pump fuse and I am getting 14,4mV.... the thread said I need at least 23mV for the HP side of the pump so today my pressure tester arrived and I am getting 4 bar to the fuel pressure regulator housing so I think the fuel pump is ok, I bled some diesel off using the tester and it was cloudy so maybe air in the diesel, after a few minutes the diesel was clear. Is this just from the tester comes the air or do you think I have air in the diesel problem. I can't smell diesel in my oil so maybe the injector seals are ok????

Where/what is the topside switch, I am getting no fault codes

If you get no codes the management is OK, diesel smell is sign of worn o-rings which has nothing to do with the starting/running issues it can only put fuel in the oil as the fuel pressure is higher than the oil pressure and can avoid the seal, the problem in this case could be the copper washers which are letting compressed combustion gas back into the fuel return rail and as you saw ''cloudy" fuel it seems very like that, this pic might be relevant. IMO better change the washers before you try something else
