My defender Td5 70000 miles w reg, used to start on the button, but has been getting worse since a service, including fuel filter, it had 2 wks ago, mentioned this to mechanic and he started talking about injectors.

It does nt miss a beat once started and is still starting eventually but takes longer and longer to fire up, starter sounds fine no clicking or anything, battery is good and i have just changed the glow plugs but still really slow to get going.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
Matt

No it sounds fine, did wonder about that myself, there is a lot of oily crap on the chassis near the fuel filter is that just normal for a 110, its been there fore a while by the look of it!
Also makes no differance if engine is warm still slower to start than it was...Thanks for your time Ratty

Roughly how long is it taking to start? Is there any smoke from the exhaust while it's turning over? Is it turning over as fast as usual or is it slower? Does it misfire a couple of a beats before running smoothly after start up?

It turns over at the same speed, bit more diesel smoke than normal, and the really strange thing is the time it takes to fire varies from relatively quick an hour a go to nearly 40 seconds just now.... and nearly not at all at sainsburys earlier!

First off I would try changing the fuel filter again to be on the safe side. It isn't unknown for the odd duff one to be about. Was it a main dealer or a local garage that did the service? Have a look at the fuel filter and see what brand it is. Britpart ones are reknowned for being problamatic. Fram or genuine landrover are usually ok. Did the garage touch the injectors? Is it lacking power when on the move. If it's lacking power it could be cos of the filter or it could be a sign that the fuel pump is on its last legs. If everything is looking ok I would suspect a faulty injector seal.

right thanks for that...gen filter ,power etc is all fine so maybe injector seal will have a word with mechy thanks for your trouble your a star

Injector seals maybe ok for now!

just got a mate to have a look and he scraped off all the crap on the fuel filter head and there is a rather large piece missing from the casting on the nearest (tank end) pipe. Now all the crap is removed rather a large leak too, we suspect this only started to go wrong after the service as some of the gunk was disturbed.

Have been doing searches for a td5 fuel filter assembly but no luck so far...are they the same as the disco,s..and or does anyone have a link to a retailer?

Maybe this will help! I can't find the part number for the fuel filter housing but I am sure someone on here will know.

Thanks,
checked with our local independant and discovered that on a td5 they work out at £268 + vat!! (even Steve at Jsf was surprised and double checked)
So did a run of emails on ebay to folks breaking td5 s and have found one locally for £40, picking it up tomorrow, so fingers crossed ......hope it starts to fire up again as she is very slow to start now and with the price of fuel i am leaving a fair bit around the county!

Just fitted a second hand filter head, lovely no leaks now....all went too well though as when i tried to turn over there was nothing,,didly squat..battery is charged , jumped start fine but nothing from ignition, am thinking starter solonoid??? just can't find it!

ok hit starter with hammer and long bar! starts like it used too now, first time will replace the solonoid parts at some point......end of thread thanks to all
