defender 110 td5 hi cap 52 plate 168 000 miles .
just been serviced with correct good quality oil and correct genuine filters .
its developed a horrid knocking almost like its not firing on all cylinders . this happend in a space of 2 days . its not the old oil in wireing loom problem as ive checked both ends and they are both as clean as a whistle . somone mentioned something about a turbo wastegate ? like if its not opening im in **** street ? any pointers or ideas would be real helpfull thanks .

Hi Bloat. At that mileage / year your machine has had to work for its living that's for sure.

A few things spring to mind that it could be, especially after a service. Faulty filters, oil pressure release valve stuck open, your head has failed leaking diesel into your nice clean oil (has the engine oil level gone up?).

If it's not a big end / piston knock perhaps some pipework has failed / come loose in the intake circuit somewhere.

Friends disco developed the issue over night, injector washer was to blame, we took the injectors out, sorted all the washers (it was christmas time and no where was open). We annealed them put them back in. Fixed it instantly.

Get the screwdriver out and see if you can listen to find out which one is knocking, then do the relevant injector in the off chance thats all it is.

You should be able to see the turbo wastegate actuator operating if you get somebody to rev the engine. It should not cause any knocking as all it does is switch the exhaust gasses away from the turbo at a pre set turbo pressure. If its stuck open it will effectively mean you have a non turbo engine and if its stuck closed you will overboost and the ECU will go into limp mode. Non of these will result in knocking.
Diesels dont need a spark plug to fire so as long as there is fuel and compression they will go bang. Can you hear a distinct "miss" at the exhaust tail pipe? If not then its firing on all 5.
Loud knocking is usually big or small ends or piston slap in time with the engine revs. Broken valves make knocking noises but at half the engine revs. Rumbling is normally crank bearings. Its hard to diagnose without hearing it but it dont sound good.

Hang on, I thought defenders were good for 200,000 miles and beyond?
Legendary reliability and all that?

glad to say that it was something really simple . injector washers . plugged into mates diagnostics . fixed in 2 hours . runds like a beut . and as to al those who say shes dead at tht mileage . you have no faith !!!! but it is doing well considering its always towing , either 3 ton of hay straw wheat or a mini digger !!!

Why should 168000 miles be the end of its life? worst case, a rebore, over size pistons, grind the crank and new shells, engine will be (nearly) as good as new.

plus it would be a good chance to get it balanced and the head worked on slightly.
