I am looking to upgrade my TD5 by having a new chip upgrade with a main dealer (HR Owen in West London) who have told me that I do not need to do anything else to the car to increase the performance and refuse to give me any other advice (obviously because this is not a manufacturer recommended upgrade??)

However, I have been told that if you upgrade the chip you should also alter other parts of the engine e.g. intercooler, turbo, gearing/overdrive etc as in the following link;

http://www.essexturbochargers.co.uk/td5-poweer.htm

Does anyone have any experience of chip upgrades (ECU tweak or new chipset) or upgrades such as the above as it seems I am entering into a world about which I know very little. I am not very technically minded.

The car is used both on/off road and also undertakes towing.

Confused of London?

I believe there are a lot of different views on this subject but I took the plunge and had a chip and intercooler conversion on an '03 TD5 from :-

Can't recommend either Jeremy or the work he did enough, topbloke. IMHO, power and tourqe increase is very significant and makes for a much more driveable vehicle, for instance you can accelerate uphill instead of just slowing down. Try the web site links for more info.

I think there are several agents for this conversion around the country including Scorpion and Devon 4X4.

look threw the dealer list here this company is owned by essex turbos :)

Just 1 pointer if a fuel map is mapped CORRECTLY there is only one type you can use.
As long as the tuner has maped it correctly it dont matter who you buy it off they are almost definelty the same :)

i can u tell me 1 thing, does your car pass the mot with the upgrade chip or do u have to have the chip changed back to original for the emisions test?

The car will run better chipped and bigger intercooler and should only effect emmissions to make it better on mot mine was a lot better down from 3% to 1.05% this year so i would go for it,tiga

As you no minimania when i chipped your ecu after it was done and i did the smoke test it was well within the limits :)

Hey there, or should I say G'day from Australia?

I have an ECU upgrade from Landie Spares in Thomastown Victoria. It made a huge difference without causing black smoke or a huge increase in fuel consumption. Cost $699AUD. Gives about a 20% increase in power and torque. I couldn't help wondering what was wrong with the Landie engineers who did the original chip. Perhaps the chief engineer was someone's grandmother - back in her day 101KW and 19 seconds to 100Kmh was considered a performance car. I now do 11 sec to 100 Kmh. I can pass slow cars without a 1Km run-up. I can go up a hill on cruise without the auto changing down to 3rd. Still a turbo lag to take-off but then it pulls like a speed boat. Used to get 11 litres/100Km and now 13 litres/100Km fuel ecc. but I am still enjoying the extra power so sedate driving may see an improvement ( will let you know). You really notice the extra power at higher revs (over 4000RPM).

I used to have Jeep grand Cherokee 2.7 CRD (same engine supposedly as the superseded M class merc). Now that had grunt, but it handled like a bag of @#$%. It did 0-100Kmh in 10 seconds and with heavy driving gave 10 Litres/100Km. It also had the best brakes I ever experienced on any vehicle. SII Disco with ACE handles really well but one needs to allow an extra 50 metres for braking - Landie engineers don't know how to make brakes either. Anyone know how to fix the brakes?

Have a re-map chip in 2000 Disco Td5, made a huge difference, faster take-off, can pass trucks on Hwy and get up steep inclines without it slowing. BUT, the cruise control hunts about a lot. OK on open Hwy at fixed speed, but don't try decrease or increase speed - it goes all over the place. This is controlled from the ECU. I can live with the cruise problem but thought others need to know about it.

I recommend Ian at IRB Developments, He has done an excellent job on my 90 and his products are of the highest quality!
He has improved the power and torque massively, its easily within the engine limits and will pass an MOT with no problem. It has been verified on a rolling road, and his prices are very reasonable. Web link below:-

isnt 3% awful close to being a fail.im running a 260000 mile300 tdi depender that only showed 1.3% at its last test 2 weeks ago
