Oh dear, sorry to bring this subject up but my new to me ('99, 125k)td5 has just overheated on me. The head gasket was done just a few miles ago before i bought it(for peanuts). the turbo was duff so a new one of those sorted it oue. cleaned out the intercooler and a little of the inlet manifold and oil smoke is subsiding now. Drove her around town for an hour the other day and all fine, just took her up the dual carriage way adn she got to 3/4 on temp guage so pulled in and noticed the top little pipe coming off the rad has been glued inplace and this had failed and steam was coming out of there. stopped engine and of course she dumped the coolant out.

Could this little leak be causing the overheating as system is not pressurized or could the head job be duff?
I found out the job was down by local Landy dealer and am waiting fot them to call me back so i can ask about dowels etc.

Had a good search through forum and found lots of possible answers but thought i would have my own thread.;)

Sounds like the small pipe off the top of the rad is to blame. Bung a new one on and then keep your fingers crossed it blew cos it had already been repaired once rather than cos it's over pressurising.

thanks ratty, i hope thats the way round it happened and not the pressure popping it off. New rad time then.

Hope that's right. If you can get sense out of the people who did the CHG ask if they pressure tested the head. I'm afraid they are prone to cracking.

I have found out the head was taken off and found the dowls had allowed it to move so new gasket and roadtested. they said all fine but this was only within 100 miles ago. will get new rad or hope to get this one fixed then try again.
water marks on number 5 bore apparantly but they bolted back together so cant have been that bad. this was a local main Landy dealer.

fingers crossed!

It was a main dealer who did mine too (under warranty). They put plastic dowels in it. And the head cracked about 20 000 miles later. Overheating is NOT good for this engine - I think it was the overheating from the blown gasket that started the head crack on mine. Get it fixed before it overheats again.

well tool the rad off today. it look as if the glue had blocked the hole where the pipe was glued back on. i have a new rad arriving on tuesday hopefully. whlst im there i will change the fan belt. is the tensioner spring loaded or do i have to wind it back off?
